Bikram Yoga Rules

I have been doing Bikram Yoga, aka hot yoga, for about a week now. My sister has been telling me for months to start trying it out and I finally took a class.

My first class was hell, I couldn't take the heat or smell. The poses weren't too terrible but it definitely wasn't a pleasant experience overall.

One week and five classes later, it is like crack to me. I can't get enough.

After I do morning yoga I feel very pleasant and peaceful all day. In general I am a very energetic person but yoga has completely mellowed me out. Nothing phases me anymore and I have a sense of serenity that I've never quite experienced.

Most of the physical activities I've taken in the past or present have been aggressive aerobic/anaerobic exercises (Football, Jiujitsu, Fencing, Muay Thai). Yoga is unlike anything I've ever done and it is probably more challenging than I ever could have imagined it being.

I am hooked and can't wait to get back. I'd like to study the science behind what is happening to my body - apparently Bikram yoga is good for purging your body of toxins and stimulating organs.

If there are any yogis out there who could shed a light on the health benefits and science of yoga, I'd love to hear your thoughts.

If anyone knows anything specifically about fat loss I"d like to know about that.

Glad to hear

I have used Yoga to help me with my depression and social anxiety and it has paid off big dividends. I like how it makes me calm and peaceful as you say, my mind is clear throughout the day which is a relief in itself.

I would check out the Bhagavid Gita for some philosophical knowledge of Yoga.

Ish

P.S. although I practice Yoga, I am no Yogi (I like eating meat [Image: sad.gif] )

It's such a mindfuck to hear that people can burn over 1000 calories with Bikram. Being an athlete, it's very counterintuitive. I feel like unless I am sprinting around and busting my ass, it is impossible for me to be burning that many calories.

Having said that, I definitely see a lot of hot yoga people.

There is a 1 day seminar held by the wife of Bikram in Sydney early August, if I am able to attend it than I shall report back with all the information.
Bikrams wife is the expert on the therapeutic science behind it all, the seminar should be great to learn about all the benfits.

I've done it just on 3 months now, it's still a killer each lesson!
