Word, Brian. I know I am. I'm just unsatisfied that I didn't reach my completely unrealistic goals that I made a month ago.

Last night I brought another girl home. I screen for two things here: are they going to try to make me pay and does she have a motorbike.

Shit worked out well so I was able to hitch a ride with her to my crib.

She wouldn't leave until like 2:30 PM. She didn't want me to pay her but I was getting impatient so I paid her 10 dollars to get out of my apartment.

I guess she won.

Whatever. That's less than you'd pay buying some American slut a drink in most cities. Or hell, even paying for a cab home with her would be more expensive in many places. I "shored" a chick in Buenos Aires one night by agreeing to buy her breakfast. She was insanely hot and normally charged something like $250US a night (1k pesos). Best 40 pesos I spent my whole time there.

My philosophy is this: if she asks for less money than the average pizza man... then it doesn't count.

Overall I am disappointed by my trip. I am leaving on Wednesday and I did not lose close to as much weight as I wanted. In fact I only lost like 2 or 3 pounds the entire month, despite eating pretty well and working out like crazy. To be fair, I slacked off toward the end a little bit.

Oh, and I am STD free as of today. Nice.

Did you eat all that rice they give you with the Thai curry? That might be why you didn't lose weight.

Yeah, it's impossible to work out 6 hours a day, 6 days a week for a month, eat decently and NOT have some sort of body recomp. My guess is that you're much leaner and your BF% is down quite a bit even though your weight is the same. That's actually probably better than just losing weight.

hey, sorry for the long wait before responding

Yes, it's obvious that I have improved in fitness. My face has gotten clearly more cut and angular and I can see my abs (although I'm not really anywhere close to a six pack).

I have been doing bikram yoga a lot recently since I"ve come to Seoul. If anyone is interested in learning more about it let me know. There are a ton of health benefits in addition to sustainable fat loss.

"It is possible that I have gained muscle and lost fat, which would explain the non-movement on the scale. I know we should not take the scale too seriously as long as we are losing fat, but it is a bit discouraging to not see my weight go down at least a bit."

If possible, you need to start tracking progress with a hydrostatic body fat test. It has an error rate of +-2% but it is nearly dead on in terms of consistency for tracking progress. You will see how many pounds of fat and muscle gained/lost, and any corresponding change to your resting metabolic rate.

If you can't find hydrostatic, the next best option is called DEXA.

Anyone know what's the deal with Koh Samui? I'm planning on being there over new year's, I hear it is pretty touristy, and there's lot's of great night life, but I don't think the p4p scene is quite as huge as Phuket, although I may be wrong.

To the OP, was the trip worth it from a Muay Thai stand point?
Do you feel you can improve your skills by staying in the states and training vs training there?
Also, you mentioned autumn is the best time to train there, which months would that be?
BTW, I received personal training from a professional body builder a while back, his key point was diet is 80% of loosing FAT. You shouldn't focus on the scale but on BFI. He had me doing 1 hour of cardio each morning on an empty stomach (and an hour at night) and only had 2 small servings of carbs a day. Dropped 40 lbs in 2 months, yes I lost some muscle but results were well worth it. There is a great book called "Burn the fat, keep the muscle", I would suggest checking it out.

Yes, absolutely worth it from a MT standpoint. Even though I went to a camp that was notoriously touristy (http://www.rawaimuaythai.com) there is nothing like being immersed in a muay thai camp and being taught by Thai trainers IN Thailand. You are paying a premium (by Thai standards) to get over there and live as a nak muay, and the level of atention given to you will be far superior to that of the US.

Yes, diet is most of what is involved in getting fit. I've read Tom Venuto's stuff and while it is not revolutionary he makes a lot of good points.

Yeah I am definitely going to do sinbi, have you been there?

The guy who runs the place told me that he wants to experiment designing me a fat loss program. I was excited about it but he never really got back to me after our initial email exchange, so I just did rawai.

Thanks for the reply.
I would highly suggest talking to a dietician then, I had the best results I have ever had in my life specified for my lifestyle ( my trainer was a dietician btw).

I will be in Thailand for 10 days in November to check out the gyms, hopefully will go back to train in February sometime.

I just finished up a month at Rawai (same place YMG trained). For the most part I ate well, and only went out drinking once a week.

I only lost 2.5kg (5lbs), but I obviously put on muscle, particularly on my arms. Honestly I didn't have a whole lot to lose since I was 6'2", 193lbs and about 14-15% BF coming in. Now I'm 187lbs and more like 12% BF. Still 3-5 lbs away from a six pack.

If you're looking JUST to lose fat, unless you're hugely overweight, that's not the place to do it. The reason is, is that if you're a skinny guy with a little extra around the middle (like me), it's going to put on as much muscle as it is going to burn fat. So from that perspective, the fat burning process is going to take twice as long as it would if you had just gone running on a treadmill every day or whatever. A friend of mine there was hugely overweight and he lost 12kg (27lbs) in just four weeks. That's insane.

I honestly wish I had done 2-3 months there. It really felt like it took me 3 weeks or so just to get to the point where my body could handle the daily workouts for six days in a row. Also, the 5-6 guys there who had been there for multiple months were ALL ripped with six packs and were jacked as all hell. One month seems to get you from wherever you are into great shape. Then the second/third month takes you from being in great shape and making you ripped and a fucking machine.

The word on the street was that Sinbi was better from an actual fighting perspective. Rawai is supposedly the more "touristy" gym for people who just want to come in and lose some weight -- although the long-term fighters at Rawai all have ridiculous winning streaks. Sinbi is supposed to be more rigorous about actual Muay Thai training -- sparing and technique and whatnot. Tiger is supposedly hardcore and full of MMA guys on roids and shit.

Either way, my time in Rawai was amazing and I'd go back in a heartbeat.

Entropy, I'm glad you enjoyed muay thai camp. My impressions about rawai are similar to yours. I've met some Tiger muay thai dudes and I can vouch that they are hardcore.

I also strongly agree that three months is the ideal amount of time to do something like this - for exacly the point you mentioned, that it takes time for the body to become used to that level of training.

WHen I go to Bangkok I am going to get back into hardcore muay thai training.

so after reviewing the sites, its seems Tiger is cheaper then rawai, but it seems the instructors have more...... highly rated real fighters. I didnt really see any stats that wowed me about tiger, tho I do like the idea of MMA over purely muay thai.

Would you guys say that weight loss would be about the same in both camps? what about muscle gains, I would think the muscle gains would be a little more with MMA? I like the fact that tiger has a restaurant etc...

I am trying to decide which to go to....

can anyone expound on sinbi?

I could care less about being able to say I went to a "real muay thai gym in thailand" I want good training and good weight loss/fitness. I dont have a lot to loose but probably like entropy just a little belly fat and would like to get in better shape and built up so muscle back again.

Entropy,
Great to hear about your experience there. As I`m arriving in Thailand next weekend, I am very strongly considering doing a 1 month boot camp there at this Rawai centre. Heres where I stand:
I am not overweight or anything, (I am 1.75m, 83Kgs) but totally out of shape. I used to be extremely fit, playing 5-6 hours a day soccer and tennis non stop but now, I can barely run 5 minutes and I am not that old since I just turned 30 last week. And getting back in shape is one of my major goals for my 3 months mini retirement in Thailand.
My objective is the same as clr as far as what I am looking to get out of this Muay Thai boot camp: get back in shape, lose some of the belly fat I have and why not gain some muscle. If I could lose 5-6 kgs specially around the waist and belly, Id be delighted. So would this be a good fit for me to go to achieve the above in 1 month or am I too optimistic? Entropy, YMG, since you guys have done this programme, Id like to hear your views on whether that is doable in that time frame.
clr, I am thinking of doing this programme from mid-Nov to mid-Dec in Phuket. How about you?Are you already in Thailand?

I wouldn't train at Tiger.

It is full of white overweight tourists.

I recommend Sinbi, Dragon Muay Thai and Patong Gym

EDIT: You guys got your posts in before me [Image: smile.gif]

no, things have been keeping me in costa rica, but I am looking at going just after holloween, first week of november.... it would be cool to go with someone else to help push each other and already have a "buddy" there, not that I dont find new friends easy but still [Image: smile.gif] Plus There are a lot of nice villas there. I like the idea of staying on the property, but I would also be open to finding a decent place really close and jogging in every morning, just to make sure I dont get lazy [Image: smile.gif]

I thought this was pretty funny from Tiger: http://www.tigermuaythai.com/phuket-thai...zones.html

"Most Thai bargirls will stay with you for the entire night in your room for 1000-1500 Baht. Many of our students end up with Thai girlfriends while in Phuket, and negotiate a price for the girl to stay for the duration of their trip to take care of them while they are here. The Thai girls are very friendly and have excellent negotiating skills. They can get you discounts on items you might buy and most speak English to some degree."

Any reason Rawai and not Tiger? I like the MMA aspect is the only reason, and the place seems really nice and actually cheaper then rawai, which surprised me.

Rawai
Meal Plan 6,000 Baht
Deluxe Bugalow Monthly 17,000(no guests allowed)
Muay Thai and Yoga Monthly 12,000
Private lessons 500
35k baht total = 1170 USD w/o pvt lessons ( I was thinking 3 per week)

Tiger:
Muay Thai, jujitsu yoga 9,000 Baht
Meal plan 6,000
Gym Bungalow 12,000
private lessons.
27k total = 900 USD w/o pvt lessons

I must say the food at Tiger looks much better, with more options.

badstuber, I kind of liked that it was geared slightly towards americans if you will, that they have meal plans more designed for us etc.. because lets be honest, having your meals geared towards 140 lb guy and 200 lb guy can make a huge difference. Plus it seemed they were more focused on healthy muscle building/fat loss meals then the other gyms, who more seemed focused on eating local meals. I also liked that they seemed to be the only gym offering protein shakes etc... which I think would help (and I only mean help because I plan on trying to stay almost totally natural)

Are there any MMA gyms you would recommend? Or would you say just focus on the MT and go to brasil for the JJ??? [Image: smile.gif] I really dont know and only have second hand info from the interned on the gyms there in Thailand.
