War in Korea

Markets are responding to worries about war in Korea.

If people don't know, a South Korean military vessel was torpedoed and sunk by a North Korean submarine (proven) and the response has been harsher than expected.

Lumiere and I are heading to South Korea at some point soon.

Has anyone else been following this event?

Lumiere: while that is true, this is the most aggressive and direct attack that has been done by the North in decades, perhaps even since the war itself. A direct military attack that kills 46 soldiers and officers?

I've lived in Seoul and I'm Korean, so I've kept a close watch on the political relations between the two countries. I've never seen anything this dramatic before.

But yes, China, Japan, and the US all want to avoid outright confrontation. China in particular will play a huge role in how this all plays out, so far they have been neutral and have stated that their first priority is stability on the peninsula - which doesn't say much. Typically vague Chinese posture.

I did a year of active duty at Yokosuka with the US Navy. North Korea was always a hot topic.

The US forces in Japan alone on their worst day would wipe the damn floor with that whole country in a heart beat. Even if they shoot missiles they'll be intercepted within seconds. A war with North Korea wouldn't last long.

I've been reading about that ship attack and it's just bizarre.

All that "Axis of Evil" fear mongering never made sense to me. When they were testing missiles there was no point in scaring people. Those things weren't going anywhere.

It's just American bullshit.

I read some analysis that said Kim Jong Ill probably authorized it to appease his hardliners into accepting his son as their next leader. He probably figured it was a pretty safe gambit given the tepid flaccidity of The Obama Administration. It ended up possibly back-firing on China though as Japan is close to agreeing to more American troop presence because of this incident.

I wouldn't worry about going to South Korea at all right now. Make actually make end-is-near hook-ups with Lovely Korean hotties easier.

Cool, glad to hear your confidence Kona.

Missiles are a threat to Japan for sure. But what is a real and present danger to Seoul is the massive amounts of artillery shells that can be easily shot across the DMZ into Seoul. I think this is what the biggest concern is.

Any thoughts on the matter? As you as a GI I'm sure you know a thing or two about this.

My cousin who is in the South Korean military told me that "South Korea - North Korea war is like Chuck Lidell versus Skinny College Kid - No hope." He did acknowledge the possibility of an artillery attack on Seoul though, as it is not too far from the border.
