Data Sheet: Rolling Solo in Dominican Republic -- Santiago

I just returned from a 9 day trip to the Dominican Republic by myself. I flew into and out of Santiago direct, via jet blue. Great trip and it was surprisingly relaxing to travel alone, my first time doing so. I had no issues with scamming or danger.

I began by pipelining hard on badoo approximately 8 weeks prior to departure. One great thing about Santiago, tons of girls on badoo. I paid about $35 for superpowers for 6 months, but I can't even remember what that does for me. I also signed up for Dominican cupid, but didn't pay the fee, so that was pretty much useless, save for they gave out a 48 hour free messaging time, whereby I extracted 6 or 7 facebooks/numbers

A few of the women I was especially interested in wanted to skype/talk on the phone prior to arrival, did this with a couple of them.

I felt like it may have been a detriment, especially with one girl, to have given her too much attention via skype. Don't over chat them up, but keep in touch every 5 days or so via chat.

Badoo
Great resource. I landed armed with about 40 numbers. Out of the 40, I would say 12-15 I was excited about meeting, them being regular girls, either students or with jobs, and non pro's. I liked keeping things on Badoo, but be prepared to shift things over to facebook, MSN or whatsapp. Also, I didn't make a huge effort to have an awesome profile, with spectacular pics or details etc... and my facebook profile is a little shady as I keep it super private.

In terms of being able to tell who is a hooker, some girls will straight up ask you to send them money after a while, usually the super hot ones. I would say 3 or 4 girls out of a hundred I chatted with did this. Also, if you're getting one word, bland responses, yet she is still talking to you, she is probably just hoping you'll bang her for some cash. I set my location to Santiago to get more responses. Within the first 5 or 6 messages I would tell them I am american and coming down there to visit, and it's my first time. I found this to be less of a problem than I anticipated.

Language
At the outset, my spanish was decent, say a 4 out of 10. Chatting with chicks in spanish on the internet with the help of google translate is a great way to improve your skills, and I would say I elevated to a 5.5/6 by the time I arrived. After 9 days of speaking spanish I would say I'm at a 6/6.5 speaking is a bit more difficult than writing. Language skills are crucial, as most regular girls don't speak any reasonable amount of english.

Logistics
Stayed at Hotel Matum at the advice of another forum member. Also got a lot of other helpful small details from DR experts on this forum so thanks a lot!! 2500 pesos/night. It's a nice hotel that is poorly maintained, with a casino and a nightclub that is usually open till about 6 am. However pool is pretty crappy and there are bugs in the room. Location is great as most of the action is around the monument, which is walkable, although walking alone at night is not advisable. Not sure if this was exagerrated to get me to take cabs. Staff is friendly and helpful to your gaming.

Brought an unlocked blackberry with me a purchased a sim card from Orange. There are a lot of cell phone companies, Claro seems to be the biggest. Was a bit expensive, surprisingly, wound up paying about 1400 pesos for 9 days of usage. Girls arent too into texting, found it more effective to call. Similarly, because the person calling pays, the girls often will call you and hang up immediately so you call them back

Dancing
All the chicks dance. If you are into nightclub approach game, dancing skills are essential, as it is often too loud to talk even if you speak spanish. I can't really dance for shit, tiny bit of bachata.

Ladies
Basically set up 2 dates a day, lunch and drinks. Be prepared for your date to be at least 30 to 60 minutes late. Wound up having 3 flakes in total out of 13 scheduled meet ups. Banged 3 chicks, hummer from a 4th, made out with another 2 in 7 days in Santiago.

Sosua
If you like hatian prostitutes and overweight european tourists, you will be in heaven there. Otherwise, avoid this place like the plague. Tried shoring a few bartenders to no avail. This place is worse than Thailand as the whores will simply revert to begging for money once they see you are not interested. At least in Thailand, the whores are fun to have a few drinks with and have pleasant attitudes for the most part. Not here. The people are abrasive once they realize your pocket is closed. However, the beach was very very nice and clean water. I had originally planned on spending about 5 days in Santiago and 4 in Sosua/Cabarete, but I bee lined it back to Santiago after 2 days here because there are regular girls in Santiago.

Nightlife
Using the monument as a clock try:
Puerta Del Sol -- 4 ocklock. Very comfortable for a day date, and a lot of university women there at night. Went twice in the daytime for dates and approached a mixed set at night and they were friendly, we had some drinks. I drank a bit too much though....had to call it a night early.

Don't know the names -- 7 ocklock, 4 or 5 bar/clubs right next too each other. Also a nice restaurant right there called marisco center for a date.

Ahi Bar. Next block downhill from previous, and a few bars right next to it. Nice atmosphere, sunday is a good night, karaoke, little bit more relaxed and quiet atmosphere.

Lovera Bar -- take a cab there. If you are into bootyliciousness this is a good spot to go. Didn't take a girl home from there, it's a little difficult to tell who's a pro and who isnt. Dance floor game essential here. I would recommend getting there either a bit early so you can get a table and solicit women over. I showed up @ about 130 am and it was packed, couldn't move, to loud for me to get anywhere using spanish.

For day game there are 3 major malls in the city and each has a nightclub. Walking around the town center, west of and downhill from the monument is not an especially great daygame spot.

Management
Difficult to manage all the girls. I am not a great liar and had to make up a bunch of stories about when I was in sosua, when i wasnt, when I'm coming back. You tell one girl you're not available, then your date flakes, it's a lot to handle, although this isn't something I have ever been great at. I guess you can double book yourself but I don't feel right doing that kind of stuff.

Dress
Thanks to this forum I packed some nicer clothes instead of shorts and flip flops, and clearly it made a big difference. Not sure being suited up is a great idea, but jeans and a button shirt improved my experience from previous travels.

Food
Worst part of the country. Very difficult to maintain a healthy diet and I saw very few people eating vegetables/salads or anything green. Loot of food trucks and empanada stands. I feel an obesity epidemic coming on in 10 or 20 years. Everything is caked in ketchup and mayonaisse.

Rolling Solo
I found traveling alone to be surprisingly relaxing. Didn't have to have a summit for every little decision. I went out 1 night alone and met some people, and another night with a dude from the hotel, so it's not a problem and a great way to work on inner game. Will return to DR again soon. Flights are too cheap, and life in US is too shitty not to.

Y'all better get what you can while the getting is good, because I can see the handwriting on that wall...

Well, either you guys didn't find my adventures too interesting (I'm no Fisto), or you already know everything there is to know about the DR, so I'll chime in with a few final observations.

Police
During my 2 nights in Sosua I observed the police conducting a mafia style protection racket at the bar I was frequenting. I assume this is happening throughout the country. They didn't give me any problems, but I was on the verge of being a little too curious. They were in plain clothes. It is advisable to avoid any contact with officials, however friendly your intentions (Common sense). The general population is heavily armed.

Regalo Culture
Although entering a prostitution grey area, there seems to be a pervasive culture of older men keeping a harem of younger women around by providing them with small romantic style presents, or regalos, in lieu of cash. This can be accomplished with small trinkets or chotchkies, opulent gifts are likely not required. I did bring down a $10 pair of daisy dukes for one chick purchased off of amazon just to see how it played. All things being equal, seems like a good way to get a girl to come back to your room if she is on the fence. This doesn't particularly trouble me, as I don't see a huge difference between doing this vs. buying them a few drinks, but I hear how some of you might consider this to be p4p, as well as setting a bad precedent.

Skin Color
Women tend to generally prefer lighter skin in Men.

The Salon
Seems like every woman in the country goes to the salon to get their hair and nails done on Saturday. Saturday during the day is a good time to conduct non game activity if so desired.

Bank Accounts
Apparently, you can get about 10.5% interest on a savings account, if you have the proper status to be able to open one. No comment on if this is a good investment.

A final observation on the women is that because jobs are hard to come by, there are a lot of women who are simply bored out of their minds because they have no money to leave their parents' house.

Making a little side cash
Electronics are more expensive in the DR. If you have a bunch of old cell phones sitting in a drawer, you can probably sell them for some pocket change. Similarly, seems like everyone's laptop is 4 years old and infested with viruses. Laptops sell at a large premium. I believe anything with under a $200 bill of sale may be imported duty free, and anything $200 or above has a 16% custom tax. Therefore, a laptop purchased for $199.99 has no duty, one purchased for $200 has a $32 duty. However, I believe it would be unlikely for your bag to be searched upon entry. If you're willing to risk it, there is a small opportunity there.

When you go into a casino, or night club you will be frisked. There are armed guards with shotguns outside of money changers and otherwise moderate establishments. It's not uncommon to see someone openly carrying with a belt holster. There are "No Firearms" signs everywhere. I bet every taxi driver is packing heat under the seat. I didn't see one in Santiago, but as I was taking the bus to Sosua through Puerta Plata, we passed a few gun shops. I wouldn't be surprised if I could just go in and buy one. I asked many of the women I was with if they had a gun, and almost all of them told me their father had one or several in the house. Any type of upscale housing development will have armed private security.

Great Report LowercaseG, You are right there is ton of info on DR here on RVF but every additional piece helps.

To put things in perspective , Can you answer these questions for me.

1. Why did you choose Santiago Vs Santo Domingo ?

2. What % of your Bangs came from Cold approaching Vs Pipelining ?

What would you differently next time you go .......

The average person doesn't have a gun. They are very expensive in this country. A cheap gun starts around $2,000 and a glock is $5,000. Banks and money exchanges provide the security guard with a shotgun and a few shells. The shells are not loaded in the gun. At the end of the shift, the gun and shells are turned in.

If you ship a item into the country there is no tax under $200. You are taxed if it is over $200. You can also make a fake invoice. I have brought TV, Phones, Laptops, through the airport and never had a problem. It is a good way to help pay for your trip.

@ Lothario
Chose santiago because:
1. Patron's data sheet on Santiago
2. Direct flights from boston for about $425
3. More manageable than Santo Domingo...cheaper, safer, smaller, fewer tourists

All bangs resulted from pipelining. I have never been good at cold approach, trying to work on it. Got about 3 numbers from cold approached but didn't convert. Baby steps...

Side note, I am an easy target for pros, have had a hard time saying no in the past, abroad. Was equally motivated to bang chicks as I was to no bang pros. I guess from my previous experience I have an underlying fear of cold approaching in a night club, wasting a couple of hours on a girl, to later discover she is a pro. Whatever, I'll work it out.

Anyway, I have another week off in the middle of March. Thinking about returning again. I just read Elbyarde's Santo Domingo data sheet and I'm liking e-mech's post up approach i.e. tipping your glass to street traffic. That sounds like it would work pretty good. If anyone wants to plan a meetup for a few days, send me a PM.

2 hours by bus, 200 pesos on Metro Bus, which I think is a bit cheaper than Caribe tours. I was told the Metro Bus depot in Sosua is more centrally located. I stayed at Rocky's, which is a dump, although the proprietor Rick is quite helpful. You can walk there from where the bus lets you off, and if you buy a beer or something, I'm sure he'll let you leave your bag there while you walk around to find another hotel. He owns several other properties as well, and manages several others. Nice guy although his business is integrally tied into the sex tourist scene.

I believe there are 4 daily departures @ 11, 1, 3, 5

Yes, 2 nights in sosua, tried swooping bartenders, 1 night at Puerta del Sol, I Night at Lovera bar. Gotta work on it, no doubt.

Metro bus is nicer than Caribe Tours and has one less stop in Santiago. The route is Santiago, Puerto Plata and then Sosua. Takes 2 hours. Metro is 200 pesos and Caribe is 180. Caribe has a bus that leaves every hour, while Metro only leaves a few times a day.

Best way to meet girls is online. Do like LowercaseG and set up a few small dates throughout the day. Nothing fancy. A few beers.
Usually me and Rover will meet up with some girls, have fun with them until around 12 and then drop them off and go hit the nightclubs.

Thanks for the report LowerCaseG.

To anyone that has been to DR... If I go and buy a laptop, iPod, and a few other small electronics and bring them to DR how hard would it be to unload them? (and not get robbed)

As soon as I am free from this current work project I need to head down there.

Yeah, It wouldn't be unheard of to bang 3 chicks in a 24 hour period.

Lunch, meet up at 1, in the room from 4-7
Dinner/drinks meet up @ 830 in the room 11-1230
Clubbing afterwards sleep @ 7am

I got on a roll early and heading to Sosua threw off my rhythm.

Patron, sounds beta, but how do you manage the girls blowing up your phone the next day. I tried to re kindle with one chick 4 days later after I didn't call her back, and she was pissed, took some explaining. Do you just tell them your busy/ignore them/I'm not in town?

You can use the same excuse they use:
My phone doesn't have any phone credit, so i couldn't call
Se fue la luz (there was no electric) so i couldn't charge my phone
No signal

Girls will call and let the phone ring one time, This means call them back because they don't want to spend their minutes

Usually I just send them a text message. Your girl might be pissed because she knew that you were out having fun without her. I don't take these girls too serious, when they get angry. They get over it very fast.

How did you bring these items into the airport? Stowaway luggage? Airlines charge you extra for baggage? If so, how much?

How much is the tax once over 200 dollars?

Thanks.

Badoo, dominicancupid, tagged are all ok sites to find girls, but you aren't going to find the best girls in the DR online. The girls online are in 5-6 range, poor to low middle class, low end job, no job or taking a few college classes, might have a kid.

My last night in Santo Domingo I was late for a 6am flight, so I ran out of the hotel without checking out (I prepaid online). The security kept telling me to checkout, but I ignored him. I got in the taxi and told him to shut up and drive, and the hotel security guard pulled out his glock. Needless to say I walked back upstairs to the reception.
