In a statement his parents are blaming the authorities for pressing charges against him when he broke the law, saying they contributed to his suicide.

I'm not a stickler for random laws, but he did knowingly break one.

Ok, for anyone who doesn't know what this case is all about:

His crime was downloading massive amounts of academic articles from digital library (JSTOR) which charges for access to its database, the way he did it was accesing them trough the MIT network which allows anyone to have free access to such journal in the campus.

According to him, the purpose of this was to give free access to anyone via a torrent (which is available), he was a "free information" activist.

Now, this caused anger, specially among the hacker/nerd/geek community because they saw the potential charges to him (up to 35 years in prison) as a very excessive and also the family indicated that the pressures of the governmet were a cause for big stress which caused him to consider suicide, which he ultimately decided to go for.
