I understand the point of this video. Celebrities are being hypocritical.

But celebrities are making movies. Something that is not real life. They aren't promoting gun violence. They are part of a movie.

Sane people don't look at movies and think " I need to go shoot up a daycare center [Image: biggrin.gif] "

Saying that celebrities are the cause of the problem is a bullshit reason.

I feel like this is an easy spin for whole gun control debate, which as a gun owner, am against.

but still.... [Image: popcorn3.gif]

How many more...
bodyguards do these people have than your average citizen?
CCW permits do they hold in California than any minority that applies for one?
ego-maniacal sociopaths have to shoot up a public place before we realize there is something terribly wrong with celebrity worship and mass media?

So, a few weeks after a controverted and tight election, someone goes haywire and murders a lot of kids. Then afterwards a lot of famous and important people are suddenly against something they had never before expressed any interest in, asking "the people" to act against that something. And a very important and influential organization that has been defending and promoting that very same something goes silent and expresses no opinion on the subject.

Yeah... [Image: popcorn3.gif]

If Hollywood bears any responsibility for the current gun violence, then it is this: their movies, although not real, help popularize guns, especially the kind of guns they are railing against in the vid the op referenced to.

I mean, why do so many people want AR-15s and other military-style rifles? Why did the Glock handgun become so popular? Did anyone ever bother to ask these questions? Here is a fun fact to chew on: after the "Dirty Harry" movies came out, the 44 magnum revolver became a very popular handgun. Coincidence?

The popularity of AR-15s (and other military-style rifles) and handguns (like the Glock, which is featured in just about every violent movie) is in part fueled by movies and television shows which prominently feature these weapons...but these same celebs, who frequently use these same weapons in their movies & TV shows, are against gun violence. Riiiiiight.

Just to drive home the point further, here is pretty good article in The Atlantic about the difference between today's gun culture (which is influenced by movies, TV, video games, and music) and the gun culture that existed in the early '80s:

Unfortunately, you often need a celeb to say something before the general public will pay attention. More often than not, celebs are just mouthpieces for some organization. It's pub for the celeb, and the org gets its message out. The celebs that are truly invested in particular issues are out there all the time doing their thing. Unfortunately, what celebs do and say does have an influence, whether they're actually personally invested in what they say or not.

"The best kind of pride is that which compels a man to do his best when no one is watching."
