Travelling to Asia - DIARRHEA

Hi all,

I'll be travelling to China in two weeks. In the past, whenever i went to China, I'd always get about 2 weeks of massive diarrhea. After my last time there, I got the feeling the diarrhea had to do with some kind of bacteria in the food and that my body was trying to get the toxins out. This was why, for example, immodium didn't work - it just slowed down the process and gave me a fever. With that said, does anybody know of any vaccines or medications one can get to prevent this kind of bacterial infection of the digestive tract? The only thing i can think of right now is to take lots of probiotics.

Ciprofloxacin or trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazol are effective against most cases of salmonella, shigella gastroenteritis which are the most common causes.

When in Rome....

Ask the locals what they eat to counteract an upset stomach. They may turn you onto a soup, or herbs. In the DR I found the local yogurt to help immensely. I guess it introduced local "good" bacteria.

Get yourself some clay.

If it still happens look into charcoal tablets.

If I am eating something questionable, I'll make sure and drink some alcohol with it to kill any germs.

Shanbangs: Take Ciprofloxacin , You most likely have Bacterial Gastroenteritis and please do not take Imodium that will slow you diarhhea which is a mechanism that your body gets rid of the toxins and bacteria.

Make your you keep up with replacing the electrolytes and water, keep up with Hydration, Use Oral Rehydrating Solution and or Pedialyte.

Stay away from MilK and cheese. Liquid ans soft food only Yogurt is good as it has good bacteria.

PM me if if you have any specific question.........

Thanks for the suggestion guys. Should I take ciprofloxacin before the diarrhea or only after it has occurred? And this is over the counter?

NVM, I think I'll need a prescription. Gonna schedule an appointment so I can get it before I leave for China.

VERY popular in Bali, hence Bali-Belly

No escape really, as you wash in the water, eat food thats been washed with it, ice-cubes etc

Once you had it you can rock on though, its a killer of a thing, vomit, diarrhea and cramps all in one.

Never had any issue in China, ate every sort of thing, maybe just luck of the draw.

-Take probiotics. Get a great brand + take 1 per day. They are "good" bacteria that compete for resources with the bad ones

-Most normal travelllers' diarhorrea goes in 3-5 days unless it's something worse

-Take electrolytes

-The excessive oil in chinese food can cause this. You can upregulate your lypase enzyme (that breaks down fat) by eating more fat before you go.

You wanna avoid antibiotics if you can. The fluroquinones dont do you any good.

I'd say stay away from anything sold by street venders for at least a couple weeks. This won't completely get rid of it, but it'll probably lessen the effects of diarrhea.

I don't think asking the locals for help will do much, since they're used to the bacteria in the food.
