Hostess to go out of business

This could be a great money making opportunity. Go to the store and buy up as many Twinkies Boxes as possible and then sell them on ebay when they run out to desperate fatties...

I can already see the description now:

Good for everyone's health probably, but, I must say, the old Twinkies from the 1980s with the saturated fat overload were unique. The new ones don't taste anything like it.

Also, who could forget their pudding pies.

And the ninja turtle pudding pies:

How in the hell did they go bankrupt? Selling processed foods in the US is like being the herion kingpin of Baltimore. You shouldn't be able to fuck that up.

I went to top foods and fred meyer today to buy some twinkies and they were already sold out! Then I went over to Safeway and there was plenty left so I bought 5 boxes just for the hell of it. I figure it I get lucky no one else will make them and I can sell them on ebay in a few years for $10 a box.

I had to open one of the boxes and eat one because I could not rememeber the last time I ate one. Had to be at least 10 years ago. I ate 4 of them like a good american and then felt like shit afterwards.

If Obama saves companies and jobs, he is a socialist thug who is interfering in the market and isn't letting free market economics take it's course.

If Obama doesn't do anything and let's the free market economy take it's course, he is a socialist thug who is causing companies to go bankrupt.

Do you think it's possible that company wasn't being run efficiently, nobody was buying their shitty, unhealthy products any more and they deserved to go bankrupt?

I can hear the lamentation of the fatties. The run on the remaining Hostess products is hilarious. The bus I take to the subway passes right by the Jamaica, Queens Hostess outlet. The aren't gone forever though - they'll sell the recipe, and we'll see our favorite treats come back with a different name, made by a different company. I was never big on Twinkies, Ding-Dongs, Ho-Hos or the donuts, but I occasionally ate the fruit pies. To this day the only snack cake I really eat are Funny Bones.

Well, if you read the comments here, it was all the fault of the unions. In reality, it was gross mismanagement. After their first bankruptcy, the unions made concessions with the promise that the money would be pumped back in to the company to revitalize it. That never materialized. Not one dime was spent on improving the company.

When you get into bed with private equity groups, there's a good chance you'll get fucked hard. They don't care about the company. They don't care about long term earnings. All they care about is making their money/profit as quickly as possible, and many times, the fastest way of accomplishing this goal is to liquidate the company. In the case of Hostess, total capitulation by the unions after already making years of concessions would have been the only way to save the company, so it's understandable why the union had decided they had enough, because eventually they would have been bled down to minimum wage with no benefits, and after that, the private equity firms would have opted to liquidate anyway.

So people can blame "union entitlement." But I think they do it because they don't understand, nor do they care to understand how management and Wall Street killed the company.

Cmon man ! Dont put words in my mouth. I did not blame or say anything about Obama in my post and why would I ? He has nothing to do with the liquidation of the company (at least directly). I blamed the Unions and rightfully so.

Why we even have unions in this day and age eludes me. Unions were formed during the days when factories had horrible working conditions and hours, no health and safety laws, child labor (basically a form of paid slavery). Their purpose was to protect the poor workers who had no say and level the playing field. In this day and age we have enough rules, regulations and restraints that prevent employer abuse.

Unions have devolved from organizations that protect the average working man to the largest, most powerful and disgustingly rapacious special interest groups in the country.

They cost taxpayers billions of dollars, their members are over-paid and under-worked, they ruin public education etc... Everywhere they go they cause destruction. Look at the heavily Unionized cities in the rust belt ... look at cities like San Bernardino ... all broke !!

But the worst part is that they have the power to swing national election outcomes. They handed Obama Wisconsin, Ohio ... fuck even Michigan. It does not matter ... Liberal , conservative or anything in between ; Unions are evil and they need to be stopped.

Twinkies are the new fine wine now.

Isn't this a fairly viable business idea, given that these things have very long expiration dates? (or maybe not, but the rumor is that they don't go bad)

10. Will I be eligible for unemployment benefits?

It depends on what state you are in and if you went on strike. For example, in some states, striking employees are not entitled to unemployment benefits. You are encouraged to contact the unemployment office for your state. The following website can help you locate your nearest state employment office: http://www.servicelocator.org.

Punished for striking. I'm not anti Union but the Unions did go too far this time. Too greedy and too entitled? When you destroy the very company you work for I would say yes. They were obviously pushing the limits as it was. Weren't they even offered 25% of the business itself?

Is this a sign of things to come? Probably.

Hostess to go out of business

I was reading a news article about this story and someone left an interesting comment about why hostess went out of business. I'll paste it below:

Quote:Quote:

Hostess Brands, the company that makes Twinkies, Ding Dongs and other desserts, filed for court permission to go out of business, ---blaming a worker strike for the shutdown.?The Wall Street hedge fund managers who run the company have squeezed every cent out of Hostess for eight years. And they’ve put their friends with no experience in the baking industry in high-level management positions ?What’s happening here is a classic Bain Capital-style assault—blame the little guy to cover the greedy corporate policies that are gutting the middle class.?It’s not just happening to the workers who make the great products Americans love. What’s happening at Hostess is happening to workers all over this country. It’s wrong. And it has to stop.?Crony capitalism and poor management drove Hostess into the ground, not the workers who are now paying the price. In this struggling economy, the greedy corporate executives are willing to let 18,000 people lose their jobs—just so they can pad their pockets.?Hostess' executives are now blaming workers who’ve offered their company multiple concessions and want it to succeed. This is what’s wrecking our country.?Workers have borne the brunt of bad decision-making by executives who didn’t know anything about the baking business. And they’re the ones getting fired??These brave workers need to know we stand with them—and we’ll stand with everyone who will take a stand against the corporate race-to-the-bottom.?Hostess workers are being scapegoated because they are standing up to corporate greed.?Hostess' executives are now blaming workers for poor decisions they made that drove Hostess into the ground. What’s happening here is a classic Wall Street tactic—blame the little guy so that they can cover their greedy corporate policies that are gutting the middle class.

Yeah making garbage cakes for fat, lazy Americans sounds like rocket science. It's no simple matter of production/delivery costs versus sales. The profit motive is just so evil. In the FSU, even if there wasn't enought toilet paper to go around and their women had to use rocks for tampons the central planners were able to provide the finest garbage cakes mankind has ever seen.

Oh, wait, no, their Twinkies were called Vodka...

The joy expressed over workers losing their jobs really makes me wonder. Why are all these "libertarians" cheering on the rich guys as they triple their salaries and stomp down on the poor workers?

Do they somehow think they are different and above these workers being laid off?

YES! Yes they do think they're different and above these workers being laid off. A common theme among "libertarians" is "I'm the only person who is underpaid and undervalued, and every other middle class slob is grossly overpaid."

And what people fail to understand is what I've been saying all along. Hostess was destined to reach this conclusion. What happened to Hostess is what mobsters call a "bust out." It was planned all along. Why else would a bunch of under performing executives be given permission to give themselves raises?

Most libertarians are proponents of "the free market" but in reality, their definition of a free market isn't any more free than a market that is bogged down with regulations and restrictions. In reality, what they mean is that they want a playing field where they are free to play by any rules (or none at all) but everyone else must play by very rigid rules. If they really believed in a market that was truly free, then they would understand that labor unions are bound to occur when conditions in the market(CEOs who try to grind down wages) prompt their existence.
