Learning a trade skill

Given the precarious situation of our job market and the fact that I am going to start shifting to and fro more often, I'm feeling the need to diversify my skills and go for something that doesn't involve computers but is still useful anywhere I go.

Alas, being a university graduated, middle class ponce there's precious little I know about basic trade skills and I'm regretting my ignorance. Can anyone give me some advice and recommend anything useful I could take up? I'm thinking about welding or electrical engineering.

Look at what people need. Mechanics, electricians, and plumbers will always eat.

mechanics, electrical, welding. I have a client who is always dying to find tradespeople that aren't idiots, addicts or caught up in criminal drama. Apparently if you have a reasonable head on your shoulders your competition in metal trades is weak. Its also not half as dangerous as it used to be.
