Why am I losing weight?

Hey players. I need some advice please. I'm 5'8 and naturally very skinny. I've been hitting the weights hard for the past month and see some nice changes forming in my arms and upper chest. Arms are definetly bigger, my chest is slowly coming in and my little buddah belly went down some. I'm feeling a lot better and more confident in just a month. I jog with my dog, shoot hoops, and skate in hot Houston weather so I'm sweating like a pig a few days a week. I'm a big sweater so the humidity is really making it flood from my body.

I've lost about 9 pounds in the past month. I don't understand because my arms and chest are bigger. Hell, even my legs look more toned and thicker. What's going on?? I don't follow a strict protein diet but I do eat a good amount of home cooked food, some fast food and as much eggs/chicken/steak as I can. It's kind of freaking me out but I'm guessing the outdoor activities are causing the weight loss. I fucked a lizard I hadn't seen in 6 months just last week and she said I didn't look as skinny [Image: huh.gif]

More vascular; water loss from all the sweating? Might want to make sure you're getting enough water + electrolytes. Fat loss on places you can't see easily (your back might be more chiseled now than a month ago). New diet leading to less food in your stomach than before? Bro-science but when I'm active a lot (cardio type) I get the feeling there is less food in my belly, all the nutrients gets sucked out and everything passes through quickly.. Eating more fiber now than before? This also explains why belly is smaller, not only fat you lost there.

How much do you weight now?

If its only a month you may be burning through that water weight now. You will plateau at the 2nd or 3rd month tho so just up your calories/protien and you should be able to stabilize it. If you got a Iphone get a calorie counting App to help you track how much you getting in. I did that for the first few months and it help a lot when I went through the faze of burning through weight I literally spent most of my day eating... avocados, olive oil... tuna.. whatever... I was eating 8 meals a day.

I bet you're getting too much cardio, I'd lay off the jogging and basketball, I normally just do a light ten minute warm up on the eliptical machine at the gym. Also how often do you lift and are you doing mostly compound lifts (squat, deadlift, benchpress, pull-ups), or isolation (curls, tricep pull downs, flys, etc.). I went through a faze where I lifted everyday of the week, while I rotated off muscle groups, I think I was still overdoing it and not getting enough rest and recovery.

As far as protein, I'd just make sure to get a whey protein drink after you lift. A lot of guys say they get a lot of protein, but to gain weight you need to eat a lot and crush a shit ton of protein. For serious bodybuilders or guys who really want to gain they say you need a gram of protein per day for your target body weight (so if you want to be 170 you need 170 grams of protein each day.)

Also, don't shy away from fats in your diet, I'd drink a bunch of whole milk, eat cheese, and get good fats from stuff like avocado, olive oil, and peanuts.

I would agree that any cardio would mess up the whole getting bigger thing. I used to run 3-4 times a week and used to weight train 3-4 times a week also. I couldn't gain a pound. I was 140 the whole time. I'm 5'8"

Right now I'm 140 also but I don't run and just work out. I'm a little bigger and my back and shoulders got some definition. When I was running I was way smaller, even though I could bench more and did more weights. I do less weights now and no cardio.

So should I cut back on those outdoor activities?? That sucks because I actually enjoy being in the sun and doing shit. They help keep my belly down (I will be a skinny fat guy if I don't excercise at all).

Yes, I'm an ectomorph. I'm 5'8 and was about 150 before a month ago. I'm around 141 now. I guess I really don't care how much I weigh as long as I look good and actually am getting stronger. A lot of those boxers are so light but all muscle.

It sounds like you are adding muscle but losing belly fat. You are on the right track. Just keep lifting hard and eating clean. Stay grinding like your boy henry rollins.

Drink lots of water!

Don't jog too much and don't play ball for hours and hours. Keep your jogs short, like 30 minutes tops. And, only 2-3 times a week.

I believe I'm losing fat because I look a little muscular without a shirt. I can definetly tell I'm not as skinny actually. Thanks for the replies guys. I just assumed that I wouldn't lose weight once I really started hitting the weights and eating my ass off.

It all depends on the type of physique you are striving for. Plenty of soccer players are big and muscular and they train cardio everyday.
