Haha good bathroom trick. Nice job.

Just by even 'salvaging' your first approach attempt by getting the bang on the second, in my opinion is x2 satisfaction, it hardly ever happens with casual encounters.

Off topic but: Are you fluent in Mandarin?

Not entirely fluent (still need a dictionary to read a newpaper or watch the news), but I can hold a fluent conversation without any real difficulties, and I'm often told I have only a minimal accent. I'd say high intermediate/low advanced.

Typical American I am not, after having lived in Spain for 14 years and I would guess having travelled to more countries than most. Of course my time would have gone smoother if I had busted out some basic Jap. I am not debating you on that point. But to assume that some people would at least speak kindergarten English in a city as big as Tokyo, is quite reasonable in my mind. Honestly, I was just amazed by how little English was spoken. So I will finish up this post by saying that if you want to tap p in the Jap, you better know some of the language. Word to the wise.

That the norm for NE. Asian countries. In China, even in the Capital, most people outside the big universities won't know more English than the standard stock frazes (hellO! My name is..., etc.), despite the fact that -- as in Japan -- they have obligatory English class for about 7 or so years.

On the other hand, sometimes people who know English will be too shy to speak it, so they will pretend not to know any.

I don't understand this either.

English is taught to every kid in practically every school, and for a long time. Every Japanese person I know took 5 or more years of English.

It's as though they forget it later on.

If we got any Japanese guys reading please explain this.

Aloha!

I think it's partially due to the fact that they never use it. Plus, from what Japanese people have told me, English classes there are very theoretical and don't teach much practical conversation.

I had Latin in school for several years, and while I can often get the gist of a Latn text, I couldn't speak Latin for the life of me, mainly because I've never had to use it. I imagine English classes in Japan are similar to Latin classes in the West.

I also had Spanish and French in school for about three years, and while I could probably converse like a Kindergärtner back then, I haven't had to use either those languages for five years. While I can still read those languages fairly well, I've forgotten how to say so much that I wouldn't be able to have a conversation in those languages.

Add that to the fact that most of the Japanese people I've met were relatively shy, I can imagine even if they knew some English they'd be to shy to speak to you if you approached them in English.

Sargon speaks the truth, both in his language assessment and his flag report. While Japanese "study" for years, it is of the most rudimentary level, and standards are piss poor for all but those going to elite colleges. I've taught English part-time in a variety of settings, and I can tell you that even at the college level, students are plowed through the English courses as if they were physical ed. requirements. The bare minimum is expected from low-to-middle achievers.

The ones who speak well are either motivated learners, sharper tools, have international backgrounds, and/or have had some experience speaking to foreigners on multiple occasions. Also, it's just not that interesting for most people now that Japanese people don't have many ambitions abroad. I'm a half-Jap, born in the States, and NONE of my cousins ever want to speak to me in English or ask me questions about the language.

I just didn't see the kinds of places that I normally look for in a city (i.e. cool lounge type bars for a more mature crowd). Even asking people in Tokyo for these kinds of places, they told me...um...don't really exist here. I challenge any guy to name 5 of these bars in the city. Looking over my notes I could probably find 5, and that after talking to a million people. I was given a few ideas and one of the places did pan out somewhat...but I certainly would not call it a goldmine by a far stretch. Can't think of the name right now. It was in Ometosanto I seem to remember, which is a very swank area. I am 40 yrs. old (although look 30), so maybe this has something to do with it all. I spent some time in Roppongi. Again, I just saw a lot of cheap, fratish type bars that have about as much appeal to a guy like me as a fucking root canal. Cool hotel bars...went to a few...didn't see anything special. About the only special thing was the amount of money they charged me to drink a glass of whiskey.
I would love to know how my experience would have been different speaking some Jap. All that being said, I would go back. I'd go back just because I really enjoyed the city and the food. I loved the eye candy, but I don't expect any quick (or not so quick) lays. To the guys who have had luck...hats off to you. The Jap has some amazing looking girls. Git r done boys!

Interesting that most guys here have such positive experiences in Japan. Many guys I know (albeit pretty beta in their home countries) did not get laid on their first trip to Japan without consulting the services of a Kabukicho whore. The language barrier is the biggest deal, and the lack of good venues is the other. As many here have mentioned, Roppongi is the best place to bang some strange, but the quality is frequently dubious. Clubs tend to have better selection, but the girls that go here come equipped with Western attitudes, and some of these joints even have bullshit like "Women only VIP" sections. These are built-in cockblock constructions that are serious red-flags; don't game in any place with such a partition. If you're looking for SNLs, the seedier hip-hop bars in Pong are better bets, but the cool lounges and dive bars with frequent talent and good logistics do not simply exist in Tokyo. If I'm wrong, I'm very open to correction (to add to my venue list).

On another note, however, while I speak fluent Japanese, I never open sets in anything other than English. It helps to know the language to overcome small miscommunications, but my best successes have come when I find her trying to speak to me in my native tongue. It's also a good screener; if she gives you shit right off the bat for approaching her in English, there's a 80% chance she's not going to be friendly when you're gaming her in Japanese. Japan is full of sweet girls, but at these clubs and bars, most are going to be more "Western" than you want.

There's no denying that the education system is failing big time with the English and that almost no one speaks it very well. Very, very few can keep up with native English.
But to say that you couldn't find anyone who could have the most basic conversation with you? Something's wrong with that picture. Unless you're hitting on 80-yr-olds, I'd guess a good 90% of them do understand most very basic English.

You need to speak very slowly. I mean, ultra-slow, and clearly, for some of them. Enunciate like mad. English pronunciation is the problem here because there are so many sounds we use that they don't. Also, pronunciation actually changes when you're speaking normally. "Give them to her" in natural speech can sound like "gimtur" and they will NEVER parse that out. Separate each word and they will understand much, much more. If you still have problems with that, then write it out on paper.

Or maybe you are hitting on that particular subset of girls that were shitty students and didn't listen to a damn thing in school. These are the most likely to turn into the sexy-looking sluts that spend all their time in bars or become hostesses. They are often freeters or neets.

You'll have a hard time finding someone who doesn't understand things like "what's your name" "what's your job" (not "what do you do") "do you like pasta", etc.

Bumped this thread once again.

It's probable that I'll be spending a year in Ôsaka. Considering gaming and going out to clubs regularly, how much should I expect to spend in Ôsaka per month when including food and other daily expenses, but not including housing?

I live in Osaka.

I wouldn't want to live on less than 150 000 yen a month excluding rent. That's the minimum befitting someone who doesn't want to eat cup noodles and sit on bare tatami. Of course it all depends on your lifestyle. When you go out, drinks will be 500-700 yen, and everything is pretty expensive, but you can get some cheap and tasty eats.

The point of modern propaganda isn't only to misinform or push an agenda. It is to exhaust your critical thinking, to annihilate truth.

Haha, those photos are extremely selective. Yeah, those outfits are typical of Japanese students, but I never see people walking around looking that similar.

Ok...not going to lie and say I was approaching like a madman. I should have done more. I think I got very frustrated by the fact that nobody spoke English. It just killed it for me. Ah...one place I would recommend was in Shibuya. It was the most UNREAL mall I have ever seen. I walked in by chance and it turned out to be about 10 stories of WOMEN'S STORES. I am not kidding. Not one single men's store. Girls every fucking where. All young young girls, but some real stunners. I was with one of my boys. We walked in and upon seeing all this were like...ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME???!!!
But you are right, should have done more approaches. Lessons learned. I would love to have some basic Jap before going back though. It's just too painful to see all that P in the T and not be able to tap some of it.

this man speaks truth... that mall 109 is truly unreal. Word is that this place is where fashions in Tokyo start. I spent a few hours just enjoying the eye candy...

Pretty much every department store and every mall is 90% women's clothes, cosmetics, etc. It's truly a woman's shopping paradise and while 109 may be cool because there are NO men's shops, every shopping center in the country is crawling with lots and lots of women. That said, you still have to find the ones that are into foreigners out of the crowds.

Hi,

THANK you a lot Twister for the guide,
the missing peace is the Hotel recommendation.

Any good Hotel in Poppongi from a logistical and visitor-policy point of view?

How to get laid in Japan (easy version):

1. Go to Roppongi

2. Go to whatever club is hot at the moment. I used to frequent Gas Panic Club 99, but this was some time ago. Black guys should go to rap or reggae type clubs where there are lots of other black dudes and Japanese women. Whites or Latins should go to the other dance type clubs that are popular right now. These clubs will be filled with eager Japanese clunge.

3. Have a few drinks and have a good time. Approach, but be aware of the shy Japanese approach: proximity alert with accidental touching (it is very subtle and if in doubt, assume the sale).

4. Go for the makeout. Take them to your hotel or to a love hotel and bang.

Once you start to sex up a Japanese girl, they get really aggressive in the sack. They really love sex and have no western Christian shame about it.

It really is this easy. I saw some of the biggest nerds getting more ass than a toilet seat, and they didn't want to go back to the West.

Outside of Tokyo this will be different. I can only speak for Roppongi. I had a blast there.

NOTE: Do not neg, be cocky-funny, or over-game. A little game goes a long way in Japan. Use anti-game here or you risk causing offense and loss of face. Completely different culture on all levels. Childish cutesy humor works best.
