Brooklyn's 'john school' teaches men dangers of hookers

Men busted for patronizing prostitutes in Brooklyn get the choice of a court hearing and possible jail time — or paying $350 to sit through five hours of class time featuring lectures from an HIV-positive hooker and stern assistant district attorneys as well as graphic slides of diseased genitalia.

Out of 3,079 johns who have taken the class, only a bone-headed 26 — fewer than 1 percent — have ever been collared again for the same crime.

The Brooklyn class has been so successful that other cities, such as Philadelphia, are considering using it as a model for their own programs.
Kirsten Heine, a prosecutor in Philadelphia, recently drove to Downtown Brooklyn to sit in on a class and take notes. She said the strongest speech came from an HIV-positive former prostitute who said she kept working the streets after her diagnosis.

A class to tame the sex urge. That's a first.

What percentage of guys who didn't take the class got caught again? Is the difference statistically significant?

Not only that, but there's most definitely selection bias at work here. The guys who qualify for this program are probably mostly first-time offenders, tourists at this, and statistically unlikely to get caught again anyway.

The whole program seems more about shaming dudes and threatening them with jail, than with any actual education. Personally, I don't see the point to making prostitution illegal. If it is though, better these programs than sending dudes to jail.

Sounds like a make-work project for people with "soft" degrees in the humanities. Excluding the ex-pro can you imagine how unpleasant the women who teach this class must be?

While not exactly a high point of human culture femenists and others need to understand that there is nothing fundamentaly "wrong" with Johns, or prostitutes for that matter. They are just pushed a biut further by circumstances than others to engage in this. The pro is not a "victim". The John is nor a "pervert". They just like to criminalize behaviour so they can justify their jobs fighting it.
