Entrepreneur's Guides to Asia

The books aren't out yet, but I figure they might be very worthwhile to your guys when they do drop.

I'm a bit wary of such a large set of books for various countries. The amount of knowledge you need to succeed in any one of these places is kind of staggering. I think it's better to actually visit the country yourself and spend many months there speaking to businessmen and locals, rather that put too much stock into these books written by an "expert."

For example, I had a business plan for India and read quite a bit about the place before I left (mostly dealing with import/export logistics, legal issues, etc). However, the whole picture was completely different when I arrived. I realized how the culture of "all will be well, man" led to situations where even people with the best intentions were rarely reliable. The postal service is crap, the transportation system is crap, electricity is out half the day, and things just don't "work" ... period.

With so many countries listed, I can't imagine that the books would be that detailed. Its one thing to talk about the different languages and cultures, but unlike countries in the EU, I'm guessing that all these countries would have vastly different commercial laws regarding entrepreneurship and it would take forever to document properly.

Derek Sivers has no experience running any business outside the internet.
