I just got barreled for the first time this winter. It felt fantastic.
A lot of you will be headed out this way to swoop the groupies. I wish you luck and hope you all enjoy your time here.
However, please be safe. Our services are stretched incredibly thin. In fact, if you are inexperienced, stay out of the water.
The first real swell came today. Its only 3 pm and according to my man at Ocean Safety there have already been two fatalities.
As you will notice there are thousands of girls along the shore. "Longshoreho's" This is no time to show off.
Also, you will get the serious stink eye from the locals. A little of this is because we are territorial, sure. Its mostly though because we can see you are inexperienced and don't want to miss waves because we have to pull you out. And I'm not at all saying that we aren't going to. We may smack your punk ass around once we get you to the beach, but we're gonna do everything we can to help.
If you absolutely have to get in, check in with a lifeguard. Let them get a look at you. If no life guards are around look for locals that look like they know whats what.
Introduce yourself and ask them where they want you. Its a respect thing. And its for your own safety.
Aloha!
