I've got a pretty extended history of working with membership sites. I've built several of my own and advertised for a bunch of others.

I end up using solutions that use Paypal.
PayPal definitely works. However, there are way better alternatives that aren't going to scrape tons of $$$ off on each transaction. I would highly recommend Stripe (
https://stripe.com/), which can handle all kinds of transactions without the need for gateways or merchant accounts (both of those can be pain to deal with).

If you use wordpress for the members area
I highly recommend WordPress for your CMS. It's extremely powerful and can do just about anything. I would also recommend using it in conjunction with aMember (
http://www.amember.com/p/) which essentially sets up a full membership site for you and has a plugin that syncs up with WordPress. The other neat thing about aMember is that it can also sync up with a bunch of other web software you might be using (forums, drupal, joomla, etc.)
For designs, there are tons of themes you can grab via ThemeForest (
http://themeforest.com/) at a really reasonable price.
The only problem with aMember is that it doesn't allow Stripe for payments (I don't think). So, either build your own membership system in-house and use Stripe, or settle for PayPal/some other alternative and go with aMember. It all depends on what you plan on doing.

Do you know anything about http://www.subhub.com/ ?
This is my first time hearing about snubhub, but all of the affiliates I know swear by it for their membership sites. Tried and tested for sure.
PM for more info on any of this stuff...
