Anyone Build a Membership Website Before?

Anyone done this before?

Or have any experience?

Are there some online solutions "off the rack" (so to speak)?

If anyone can share any information, it would be greatly appreciated.

Side note:

In case you are wondering, it is not G Manifesto related.

I end up building membership sites for most of my software programs since customers need access to updates.

I think it will also depend on your payment providers (and if you want to incoporate an affiliate program). My main market primarily uses Paypal for their purchases so I end up using solutions that use Paypal.

How you handling payments?

Never heard of them G.

Instead of messing with script installations and whatnot, you may want to check this out.

https://nanacast.com/index.html?

They offer more payment options. I know the guy that owns it and he puts out good stuff. He has been a customer of mine and I purchased many products from him.

I think you can set up your memberships site on a wordpress and nanacast will lock it down to paying members.

I am using something similar (with wordpress) with a script I purchased and installed. The script I am using is locked into paypal unlike nanacast.

If you use wordpress for the members area, I highly recommend this theme. http://www.optimizepress.com

I use it for all my sites and haven't found a better one for wordpress membership sites.

I've got a pretty extended history of working with membership sites. I've built several of my own and advertised for a bunch of others.

PayPal definitely works. However, there are way better alternatives that aren't going to scrape tons of $$$ off on each transaction. I would highly recommend Stripe (https://stripe.com/), which can handle all kinds of transactions without the need for gateways or merchant accounts (both of those can be pain to deal with).

I highly recommend WordPress for your CMS. It's extremely powerful and can do just about anything. I would also recommend using it in conjunction with aMember (http://www.amember.com/p/) which essentially sets up a full membership site for you and has a plugin that syncs up with WordPress. The other neat thing about aMember is that it can also sync up with a bunch of other web software you might be using (forums, drupal, joomla, etc.)

For designs, there are tons of themes you can grab via ThemeForest (http://themeforest.com/) at a really reasonable price.

The only problem with aMember is that it doesn't allow Stripe for payments (I don't think). So, either build your own membership system in-house and use Stripe, or settle for PayPal/some other alternative and go with aMember. It all depends on what you plan on doing.

This is my first time hearing about snubhub, but all of the affiliates I know swear by it for their membership sites. Tried and tested for sure.

PM for more info on any of this stuff...

Quickest way would be to use WordPress and get the right themes, plug-ins. BuddyPress is a theme for social/membership

If you want affiliates, have a look at Plimus (they take 10% though).

I always build them myself, but for just content that's probably overkill.
