Americans don't realize how shitty their diet is

Part of the problem is the abandon of traditional wisdom in dealing with temptation.

Years back, I heard secondhand of a sermon about a reality show called Temptation Island, where people in relationships would swap places with one another, and the show was about whether they'd cheat or not. The show's authenticity aside, the sermonizer said this is distinctly NOT the approach of his traditional faith - one doesn't EXPOSE oneself to temptation and then WILL oneself into acting righteously. The people who successfully avoid temptation are successful principally BECAUSE they don't incessantly expose themselves to temptation. But the modern attitude is that exposure is okay, it's our lacking will that is the problem, that we must work on. Corporations like this, because it doesn't work, and their success is often premised upon your impulse purchases.

...I imagine that this approach is common to all of them, for it is simple traditional wisdom. Traditional wisdom is well aware of man's fallibility, and aims to equip man with the means to manage his weaknesses.

Ay - that is absolutely true.

Smart girls don't get into situations where they know they may be tempted to cheat - girls' nights out, single travels with girlfriends, excessive flirting etc.

But currently all the diet advice is company created and boils down to: "Just keep it in small doses and you are fine eating McDonald's or the daily chocolate bar."

The advice is similar to someone advising you to take a hit of heroin and then using willpower to "manage" your subsequent addiction.
