I think most movies don't deliver the "value" for what the audience pays to see it. I am sure some people feel that they don't get a $12-16 experience from seeing a movie. Sometimes, they feel like the theater owes them for the 2 hours they never get back. Or for putting up with people talking and texting during the film.
I only go to the movies if it is visually stunning. If I feel like I will miss that "wow" experience and even then the movie has to be good still in terms of story and acting.
I really like to go to the movie theater, especially here in Bangkok where they are very nice with big, comfortable chairs.
The reason I don't go so often, or watch much movies in general, is because I don't think many good films are being made anymore. I rarely see a movie and think "That movie was great, I really want to see it again!".
I think HBO, AMC, etc. is producing so much better content now than what is being released in theaters. I really liked Wolf of Wall Street, but I think it would have made a much, much better HBO series than movie.
