My two cents...
I've been cutting my own hair since I was about 14-15 years old. No one's touched it besides me since then.
It may not work for everyone, but the styles I sport can all be done using various guards on clippers and some trimming with scissors and an extra mirror. Takes a while to get good at it, but I like the freedom to do it whenever I want, make it look exactly how I want, and save the time, money, and effort of going to a barber or salon.
Whilst this may work in your case, for your particular hairstyle (and congrats on saving what would be an obscene amount of money over the years), in my opinion a haircut is something a man shouldn't skimp on - on par with clothing/style.
When you find a great barber that gives your hair the requisite attention, the cost won't even be a factor because it's an investment in your look - which is where it begins and ends.
