Yes. Alimony was forever. I'm pretty sure it still is forever in California and some other places.
The reason guys sign up for it is simple: when you're young you don't think it'll happen to you. It's the same deal with thinking you'll be the one who can smoke and not get lung cancer, or you're the one who doesn't have to save for retirement because you'll strike it rich someday.
I don't know how to warn guys the odds aren't in their favor. It's probably human nature to think you'll be the one to survive when the storm hits, so to speak.
