Well, I assume it would be really common in small towns, and maybe farms. After all, NZ does have a reputation for being barefoot(then again, so does Hawaii, which I assume no one goes barefoot there either).
Hes right that no one(or barely anyone, like 1 in 10-100 thousand) that I know in Auckland city or suburb goes without shoes. But many primary(elementary) or intermediate(middle school for you) school children go barefoot. I just never grew out of it while everyone else did. I assume that US elementary/middle school children still wear shoes.
