Credited that Santo Domingo does not feel unsafe and it is a surprisingly nice city. The central historico area feels really authentic and even though it is the tourist area of town it is still 90% Dominican. Never felt unsafe at all there. And it's nice being in SD cause you actually see tons of DR girls versus being in Punta Cana, etc and seeing mostly tourists. Punta Cana felt like one of the most artificial places I've been. I don't even think any locals really live near the resorts, they actually bus in most of the workers.
That's the bad thing IMHO about the DR--- its just hard to have a normal experience cause so many of the developed beach resort areas are just mega resorts. Most tourists come here and literally never see any of the country. Would love to come back and just go to remote places and see how things are but have a feeling it would be a pain in the ass with accommodations, etc.
