I find with workout buddies I end up talking a lot more than I should, which means less productive workouts.
For me what is most productive is working out on my own, getting a spot for 1-2 sets if I ever need it from someone nearby, and leaving the part where you catch up with buddies for after the gym over a drink or some food.
