It's possible in some cases but for most of the examples it's not obvious whether this is true or not. One example was a guy who built an outdoor bowling alley in his backyard out of astroturf. Another one was a 1923-era tugboat replica. The spaces served a variety of purposes: places to work, places to hang out, places to think and relax, places to show off your accomplishments.
I think they are some really good examples of male creativity and passion.
