The thing with these laws is yes, it doesn't seem like such a big deal to have a national id, or stricter gun control, or the government tapping phones, right NOW.
However, who knows what the government and state of the country will be like in 10, 50 or 100 years from now.
In 50 years this country could be an extremely different place. Maybe then if your average citizen doesn't have access to firearms, if the government has a list of everyone and where they live, and they can tap their phones without probable cause, shit could get ugly.
Maybe our own version of Hitler or Pol Pot comes to power. Then who knows how bad things could get. Its important to put up a fight against these kinds of laws now, to protect us against what they could use them for in the future.
