The thing I find troubling about the whole location independence craze is I simply don't know anyone in person who has pulled it off. Its just hearsay of internet gurus. Even with seeming very mobile skills like coding, companies usually want the guy on location.
I've met dozens of people doing it on my travels, they have ranged from freelancers scraping by, guys with a stable of apps and content sites, to guys telecommuting to work while they travel, and big-shot super-affiliates who were living quite a ridiculously enviable life to be honest.
You wont find them by searching for "location independence" in Google, because the people actually doing it arent blogging about location independence or lifestyle design (those are the ones selling the dream).
The people actually doing it are tucked away, entrenched in a particular niches with very specific products, services, businesses. They are "deep in the forest" of their particular industry, and actually out living their location independence, not blogging about it.
