Mexicans are pretty racist. They talk shit on anyone darker than them especially fellow Mexicans. So being black your the bottom of the totem pole. Anyway it has its pluses and minus' as darker people are often seen as less wealthy by Mexicans. So while being black they won't really like you, you are still far and away less likely to be jumped/robbed/etc. Prosti's will also charge you about $20 more and some won't do you at all.
There was a guy here(can't remember who it was now) that did a trip report on Monterrey and said it's pretty good for black dudes. Monterrey has a lot more of the Spanish-blood Mexican girls, btw. Might want to look that thread up for info.
I don't have any experience approaching in Mexico, but my guess from what I know of Mexicans is that it probably would be a more challenging place for the bruddas. I'd avoid the smaller towns where it's more traditional. I think the best shot is going to be the larger more cosmopolitan places like Mexico City which has immigrants from all the world and Guadalajara. You'll find people with freer lifestyles and not so confined by tradition. When I was in Puerto Vallarta, I met this African dude that was on vacation with his Mexican girlfriend. He was a French teacher living in Mexico City.
Mexicans are pretty racist, but like most Latins, I think it's more of a colorism per se than a hard racism like you see with neo-nazis. The racism is Latin America is really weird. They can be racist, but still be friendly to the people they are racist against. I know a Peruvian woman whose mom would flip if she married a black guy, yet her mom is completely sweet toward me and I'd never guess she thought that way. I think it has to do with wanting their kids to be light-skinned since being dark in Latin America is associated with being socially and economically disenfranchised. Anyways, I wouldn't let it stop me, there are definitely Mexican girls that are open to it as you will find people in any society that don't mind crossing the color line.
