He's a judge, not a king.

In his courtroom, on the bench, he IS king. That's why the bench is elevated above everyone else in the room also. And frankly, if you're in front of him, it's probably because you fucked up in some way. I hear you regarding having to genuflect in front of another human being, but her OBVIOUS disrespect for both the judge and the situation warranted the punishment. She probably won't end up getting punished too severely for possession of Xanax, but she should have to sell her jewelry, at least do those 30 days. Like most bubbleheads, the lesson probably won't stick, but the judge should hit her as hard as the law allows. Dudes don't get cut slack.

You're right now that I think about it more. I was initially looking at it from the perspective of him sentencing her because she disrespected HIM personally, which was fucked up. But if you look at like he is sentencing her for disrespecting the court (hence the name of the charge - contempt of court) and law itself, then it becomes clear he was in the right. It's his duty as a judge to preserve the integrity of the judicial process and ensure compliance and respect for the law.

I feel better about it looking at it from that perspective. I really just hate the idea of government officials abusing power for personal reasons, so I'm always quick to look for that sort of thing. Definitely won't be shedding any tear for this bitch though, she needed to be checked hard like that.

It's good that you've changed your mind. I do understand the whole thing about authority etc, but this isn't about that. Also, do bear in mind that she gave him the finger.

Shrodax :

I'm in 2 minds about whether or not the judge was over the top. I don't know what is considered standard in those situations so I can't form an educated opinion. But this isn't about him, it's about the girl. Why are you on her side? What is it about her conduct that can be said to be noble in any way and therefore deserve to have you on her side? Her whole performance was a joke.

She may have been nervous, but I've been in court and I was nervous too, but yet I managed to conduct myself like an adult. Surely you can see that this is a girl who is utterly unused to being called out on her behaviour, even to the extent of giving the finger to a person who (rightly or wrongly) has the power to make her life very difficult. Never mind the judge, what does that say about her?

I think the judge's attitude was lenient. If it had been me, I would have told her to stand up straight, stop smirking, stop playing with her hair, hands by her side, and speak properly, and answer all questions properly, before even starting. At first he was mock-jokey with her, hoping that she'd get the sarcasm / hint, and then he said "adios" after his first punishment as a way of letting her know that this is serious. She needed to be taught, and it doesn't matter who does the teaching.

If you join the army (I haven't, I'm just saying) you'll dislike the guy shouting at you all day, but when you come out of it tougher and more disciplined, you'll thank him. This is about her.
