I had a great time there last year, too. I was riding a motorbike through Southeast Asia and the typical tourist hedonism (the sluttiest white girls to ever walk this planet) was very welcome after a couple days of riding through the Laos countryside.
Did you get a bike in Laos?
I rode Thailand on a Honda XR250 and at that time Laos and Vietnam were no go zones for bikes with foreign plates. I really want to ride Laos, the terrain of that whole area of Thailand, Laos and China is unreal beauty.
I got the bike in Hanoi for 150 USD, it was the typical Chinese made 150cc scooter. It had Vietnam plates and I didn't have any trouble crossing into Laos, Cambodia and Thailand. China would be a challenge, though, foreigners aren't allowed to drive.
Riding through the mountains was amazing in Laos and north Vietnam. Even on the shitty scooter I was had it was some of the coolest riding I've done. South of Vang Vieng the terrain mellowed out and made for some long days in the saddle. I wish I had been able to get my hands on an XR250 for that trip but they just don't exist in 'nam.
