Recently I read an European study about hookers. The study claimed that vast majority of people who visit hookers are age 25-45, married and middle to high income - so this guy seems to fit the profile quite typically. Now talking about why, my theory about it is like that. Assuming one is looking for casual sex or one night stand and not for relationship, it could be done in two ways. You can either spend time (up to three dates as Bang says), or you can spend money ($15-$5000 and up depending on location and lady).
So when you are young and relatively poor, you typically have a lot of time to pursue women, and little to no money to pay them. Therefore you would rather spend time than money, and would pursue sex in "traditional" way through hookups and dating. Here you'd say something like "I cannot imagine someone could spend $200 to fuck a chick you can pick up from a bar after talking to her for three hours".
Then when you become more successful, typically you end up having significantly more money and significantly less time. There is a tipping point when three hours would bring you significantly more than $200, and talking to a chick in a bar for three hours with the sole purpose to fuck her once sounds like an awful investment of time - you'd rather invest $200 with guaranteed result. No shit tests, no drama, no games, and you can fuck very classy chicks. You can consider how your mentality changes if you imagine the situation where you can fuck any chick you see by paying her $1.
To summarize: to me this is just balance of time versus money. People tend to moralize the issue too much talking about completely irrelevant things like self-respect and so on, but it is just sugarcoating. I also find it very funny when people in America claim something like "I would never pay for sex" - a typical holier-than-thou talk (but again, after living here for five years I know that most people here only talk the talk, and never walk the walk, so if someone is making a statement he'd never do something, it means nothing at all). To me it is simple, and I can be honest with that: paying or not paying for sex is business decision which may make sense in some cases, and I will consider it together with other available options. I did it in past, and I'm sure I will do it in future. No problems with that.
