He makes money because of his talents, not hers. Without her he still makes that money. Without him she would likely be with some guy making 50 grand a year.

Knowing that if you do not settle the court will impose similar, or worse in his case, financial penalties it behooves one to come to an agreement. So to say that since they agreed to it it's all good is ridiculous.
To imply that spousal support being tax deductible minimizes any financial penalty shows a lack of business sense. He isn't taxed on it because he essentially never earned it. His income went from 170K/month to 147k/month.
So yeah, I'd say he got penalized pretty heavily.
