I'll echo what NoMoreTO said; does it have to be a big city? If, as you say, you're coming from small town/rural, then you might be quite satisfied with what a lower-tier city has to offer.

When I moved to Winnipeg from Montreal in the late 90s, it felt like a small town with little to offer. However there was a guy I worked with who had moved there from his hometown The Pas, and he confided in me he was "having trouble getting used to living in the big city." Kind of funny to think we were talking about the same place.

If you opted for a smaller city, I would say make sure you are only an hour or two away from somewhere similar, or bigger.

If you can pick up the French quickly enough, Quebec City could be a good choice.

N.b. Rudebwoy: Mtl has five universities - there's Univ de Montréal, UQAM and HEC as well as ConU and McGill.
