Tokyo emergency my ATM card broke no cash

Look for Pacsafe travel safe on Amazon or just google it and buy directly from their web site. Worth every dollar. It's a bag with wire mesh and metal cables which you can attach to a pipe or a piece of furniture. I've had it for several years and always take it with me when I travel. The lock that comes with it is a bit shit and there is also the risk of losing the key or having somebody steal your key and try to open the safe. Buy a good combination lock and use that instead.

I second this suggestion. I have used a PacSafe for years. There is always some place to attach it. I once attached it to a sturdy TV ceiling mount and then hid it behind the TV! Since I purchased mine (about five years ago) they have improved their bags by re-engineering both the locking mechanism and the lock.

They also make backpacks with the same wire mesh, so that criminals cannot slash your backpack and steal stuff before you notice.

I also use one of their secret belt wallets, where I store a third of my money and half my credit cards. It attaches to the belt -- and it is much less obtrusive than a money belt that is worn around the waist. I keep a third of my cash in this belt wallet, a third in my PacSafe, and a third well-hidden in my room. I once hid $1,500 behind some really wide doorway molding located above a doorway. Just take a look around and think outside the box.
