Go for it man, anything is better than a small private school or a community college.
Focus on your studies though. Don't get too sucked into the party scene, I have too many friends who are regretting that now. It's a really fine line.
Tennessee/Chapel Hill/UGA. All good places. I'm currently at one of the three. It just depends on what state you grew up in. Still the experience is pretty similar across the board. Don't worry about racism, etc. the student populations are large enough to have countless niches. Nobody will be outright racist, but I would say that most of the upper-class sorority girls will stick to their demographic. Is what it is.
If you have the work ethic to be able to study and work a job at the same time, by all means do it. You might be restricted in terms of being able to go out every weekend and get laid, but the advantage is that you'll graduate with a nice amount of $ saved up.
This comes in handy especially if you're moving to NYC after you graduate. Fucking expensive.
