I assume he had at least 1000 rounds on him to accomplish this heinous act. Anything short of machine gun, will make this task practically impossible.

Bullets don't stop at just one body, and "call it a day". Rifle caliber's can pierce more than a single body, and don't forget the whole aspect of this being a crowded area and people trampling each other adding to the injuries.
