The sanitation aspect is the biggest detractor for me and I don't know how much science there really is to support "earthing." I toss into the "it's fun to think about" bucket. I did try out those funky looking 1st generation toe shoes when they first came out. I did feel much freer running, but it was pretty painful and not sustainable (I had to reduce to about one out of three runs per week). I still love running barefoot on the beach though... as long as I steer clear of shells, garbage, and rocks.
