I think this is a natural result of a society that doesn't promote honesty as a virtue, but rather promotes salesmanship and influence. Smart people end up using their brains more to take advantage of others rather than to do anything constructive. There is a reason why people tend to interpret honesty as stupidity. It doesn't even cross anyone's mind that a person might be honest due to ethics.
