You can get by just fine in academia by only ever talking about research. Completely normal and in character.
Like every office setting there is a ton of gossip and people will learn quickly to ask you about research topics and not other things. This is somewhat prestigious.
If you must make small talk, stick to sports, television, and family. Interesting non-research tier developments in your field are also acceptable (e.g. "so and so is building a new research center").
If you want to see real change as a sleeper agent do what the hippies did in the sixties: work your way up the ladder until you are in charge. Hire people who agree with your principles. Push out those who don't. Judging by them it will take about thirty years.
Alternatively: make your own fortune and found your own research institute.
