Utah is a weird state. Salt Lake is a weird city. Outside of the downtown area many of the neighborhoods look a bit run down.

There are people on the borderline of white trash everywhere. There are more homeless than you would expect for such a small city.

There is a sort of fucked up depressing energy in this city. You can feel the failure in many of the people.

It feels like a more white trash, smaller, on the down swing, much less cool version of Denver.

You nailed it. SLC is my home base, and the energy you mentioned had been gnawing at me but I couldn't quite describe it. You did it perfectly. There is something about it here; the angry hipsters, the aggressive homeless, the white trash, the air of inferiority.

SLC has become waaaaay more progressive in the last few years, and I think it's due to the inferiority complex many Utahns have of their state being (whether correct or not) a backwater of the US. So they double down on the progressive policies and signaling to show they can be as cool as California too. It's kind of sad really.

I love the outdoor recreation opportunities, low taxation, and permissive gun laws here though. Gonna make the move higher up into the mountains and re-establish camp in Park City. See how that goes for a year or so. The valley is becoming hot, crowded, and angry.

Is there anywhere in the US that isn't becoming more and more trashy?
