I fully agree don't get too paranoid however Cape Town with its beautiful landscape and nice people gives a false sense of security. Don't walk home after going out always take a taxi. Watch your belongings in bars and clubs and never leave your phone openly on a table.
If you use common sense and stay in safe areas you will not have problems but keep in mind that South Africa is one of the most dangerous countries in the world.
