I don't think it's about ego boost, in fact I'd say it's the reverse of what you're saying.
Guy's with low notch counts will try nailing everything because....they have a low notch county and want to to boost that number/ego up. I know I did that.
There comes a point where you've had enough notch counts you go for quality and higher standards from then on out, you wouldn't care if you passed on a fatty or a sub 7 girl.
In this particular case proposed, I'd pass, it'd obviously be different in other instances.
