American Sniper: the Movie

American Sniper: the Movie

This is a fantastic movie. Absolutely outstanding. It chronicles the man referred to as "the devil of Ramadi". The best killing sniper in american history. He is Navy Seal Chris Kyle.

WE at RVF already had a couple of threads about the guy before. Navy SEAL Sniper Chris Kyle Knocks Out Jesse Ventura?

His wikipedia page gives a brief synopsis of his life.

I don't want to write too much about him or the movie. It is a movie you just have to watch. I have included links to the DVD quality of the movie.

Bradley Cooper played Chris Kyle.

Here is a good link to the movie American Sniper.

I watched it and it was pretty damn good. Although I do have to wonder how accurate it is since Kyle's credibility is kinda iffy on some things.

Needless to say I'll be seeing it in the theater when it comes out too, because I like Cooper and Clint Eastwood. They deserve a couple bucks for this film.

This was a great movie. Kyle was a fucking beast and I think Cooper played a good role.

@ goldhawkster, both of mark owens books were great

BTW, its quite sad how such a true hero died. Rest in peace.

This movie gets a plus 1 from me. Action scenes were awesome and the return from abroad scenes were only a small part of the film.

When I read he died in 2013 I assumed he was killed in action. But no.

That is a sad tale indeed.

Powerful movie. I came to this thread to suggest that it would be best to "go in cold" by not researching anything about the character. The post above is a SPOILER and should not be here.

Fuck off Steve. The movie is based on a real guy, it's not a spoiler it's fact. A thread about a movie is going to involve people talking about the movie.

Cool. Provide a service to everyone by posting everything else which happened in the movie.

I think the movie was fairly piss poor and jingoistic. More loose holes and ends than a Bangkok whore. Fuck senile Clint Eastwood.
I wonder how many people Kyle actually killed? I mean, he made up a story about killing 30 people in New Orleans, and also falsely claimed that he punched out Jesse Ventura after hearing him malign servicemen (Jesse Ventura sued his estate for libel and won), so his credibility is dogshit. He was all about himself and cashing in, truth be damned. It also served US government propaganda purposes to inflate his kill count. Win win.
The whole Iraq War was dogshit. But hey, let's manufacture a "hero" and focus on the pretty trees instead of the forest that's on fire.
One point that the movie conveniently leaves out is that there was no Al Qaeda in Iraq before the US Army took down the fiercely secular Baathist regime (which had nothing to do with 9/11 and no WMD).

How much, if at all, should Eastwood concern himself with fans who misunderstand and misuse his work? If he, intentionally or not, makes a hero out of Kyle – who, bare minimum, was a racist who took pleasure in dehumanising and killing brown people – is he responsible for validating racism, murder, and dehumanisation? Is he a propagandist if people use his work as propaganda?

What a fat, stupid cunt.

And Volando, the movie is not political. I don't want every war movie I see to be a piece of shit Michael Moore propaganda piece about how much America sucks ass and all its soldiers are baby killing scumbags.

Chris Kyle had credibility problems, no doubt, and the War in Iraq was idiotic. But the movie was about the man's service not about making some fucking statement.

Well, perhaps there is a healthy medium between Michael Moore's propaganda and Clint Eastwood's jingoism?
You know something that explores the conflict and heroism that courageous individual soldiers have when serving with honor in a dishonorable and poorly thought out war that destroyed a country and enriched some American war profiteers?
To me, Pat Tillman is a much better example of a thoughtful and committed patriot then Kyle. Tillman gave up millions (and eventually his life) fighting in a conflict that he first supported and after careful thought came to disagree with...yet he fought for and with his men.
'Where Men Win Glory: The Odyssey of Pat Tillman' by Jon Krakauer is a great read, and I think much better material for a big budget widely released Hollywood movie.

Lol...Wastelander...A war, arguably, about the most decorated sniper in american history?
going through his life and views.
And you say..its not political?
Bruh.. clearly you don;t know propaganda when it hits you

First of all the movie jumped around a lot.
The back story sucked.. and and the end explanation was worse.
purely from a cinematography standpoint... the movie was rushed and horrible made.
I think that they said the movie was already being made before he died..so they awkwardly wrapped the movie up.

As for the story...It was just another american war sob story propaganda thing.
Im not bring up Kyle..Im saying the movie was just a sob story.
The trend of these war movies is pretty played out... go for the emotions of the people to keep support high, while disguising a lot of the real problems.

And yea.. even if you don't believe people will take the movie an spin it.
You underestimate how ignorant so many people in this country are.
You open up the scene with him killing a muslim woman and child.. and its instant justifcation for people to do stuff like this

I'm sure all four of those Twitter trolls were real sterling individuals before they saw American Sniper.

I can cherry-pick assholes and their tweets from Twitter to make a thousand different points about anything.

And Volando, your posts essentially boil down to you not liking Eastwood's politics so the movie's jingoistic, which makes no sense. It's not advocating anything and if it's a propaganda film it does a pretty piss poor job of getting the message you imagine it does across.

Regardless of what Eastman's politics are, he is a fool and inept at the political game. His Obama chair speech was poorly thought out, poorly done, and did serious harm to Romney.
He carries over this same heavy handed ineptness to making his pro war film.
At the end of the day, nothing I say or do or think about politics has any impact whatsoever, so a few years back I stopped caring in the sense of rooting for one "team" or another.
Now I just watch the bread and circuses and occasionally find interest/amusement in how people play the Game of Thrones and what their ability/motivation is. I try not to get emotionally invested...I breathe easier...I sleep easier, and when in doubt I play with one of my dogs.
