What kind of bread was it? Kidding.

Not necessarily funny. Especially if it was bread from this bakery:

I was once shopping at a Canadian equivalent of Wholefoods and noticed some of this bread for sale in various sizes. One smallish slice was a couple of dollars. Flown in from Paris, where they have been using the same yeast in an unbroken line for 100+ years, I think. Anyway, if you are curious, don't waste your money. One of the assistants(who was actually pretty cute) noticed me staring in shock at the smallness of the slice, and the largeness of the price and offered me a free sample. Tastes like bog-standard sourdough bread to me. But maybe my palette isn't refined enough, who knows.

Anyway, to the OP. I'm sorry, I'll forgive you stealing my stapler,a pen or two, or playing a prank, but if you steal my food we are pretty much enemies forever. Even the most easy going person in the world has certain things you just can't fuck with. For me it's my food. Maybe for your boss as well. About the only way I'd let something like that slide is if (1) you were female and (2) looked like Candice Swanepoel.

Was that 'nature's emporium'? The prices in the place make me insane. Also with you on the food at work thing, though when I used to work at an office and I'd be working late or at HH on a friday I'd raid the fridge because the cleaning staff swept out all food from it saturday morning anyway.

No, Capers in Vancouver. Don't know how the Vancouverites have any money left after paying their mortgage on overpriced real estate to spend on this kind of thing, but anyway.

The OP doesn't think it's a big deal to eat his boss' bread, but those of us who had to deal with office politics know that it is a big deal. Everything you do is logged to see if you're a "team player".

I beat my former boss in a footrace at work. Is that also grounds to deny a payrise, I wonder?

Why are you eating other peoples food without asking?

I can get quite obnoxious at times and it's a relatively small practice - so I assumed it was OK. Apparently not. No shit I won't eat their crumbs anymore. Regardless, is that relevant to me asking for a pay rise?
First..this is one of the funniest things I've read on this forum. When you eat other peoples food at work it makes you the lowest form of life working there. I had a lunchable for my kid in my work fridge and someone opened it and took the ham out. I'm still pissed after 2 months. When you think you have something and it's not there it pisses people off so yes I'm sure they were happy not to give you a rise. Buy them some pizza on Friday for a few weeks and you'll change it up a bit. You may get a rise out of it.

mech, has a point. People can be very fussy about food. If you put food somewhere, you have an idea of what you are going to do with it and then you come in and find out some pleb has gobbled it up, you would be pissed. I would myself..even if the cat replaces it with what he/she thinks I would like, I had a plan for the meal and to find it missing can be mighty pissing.

Mech, they stole your kid's ham what kind of barbaric shyt is that? Are u saying you had a sandwich and these fcuks took the ham and left the bread?

A lunchable has the ham, cheese, bread all in separate plastic bags and you make your own sandwich. So I had it for if she comes or to bring to school for her lunch. When I grabbed for it I saw it was opened and the ham was gone which caused me an entire separate trip to the grocery store. I know my guys didn't do it but a customer, relative or friend did. When I find out who there will be payback.

Has anyone had experience with being refused a pay-rise? What actions did you take? How did you reframe it to work to your advantage or keep your dignity intact?

Also Tigre, there's no way I'd apologise for my actions or ambitions. Who wants to be the low-maintenance ball licker 99% of the working population?

I was refused a payrise. I asked for 5 percent, I got zero percent. When they told me that, I was like..alright.

Then I got hired for a position at another company for mo money teehehehe.

That's how I dealt with it. Getting a better position elsewhere.

Prophylaxis,

The way I see it, if you are a rockstar at work, they can overlook you taking others' food and still give you a raise. The real issue is that your productivity cannot justify a raise...at that point petty infractions like eating coworkers' food are raised to bolster their argument that you do not deserve a raise.

As is almost always the case, the real issue is bottom line productivity. If you are an indispensable asset to the practice, you can eat the boss's bread, take a dump on her desk or do whatever.

If you are dispensable, then you should tread lightly and make sure you are well-liked by coworkers.

Yea well the OP can forget about using this place for a reference. If your future employer calls and finds out you're a break room scavenger it's done.

Corporations are pussies due to all the regulations they have. HR and all the lawyers tell everyone that for references they can't say more than someone has worked there and had a certain title. After that, everything is grounds for a lawsuit.

And if I got passed over, i would just look for a new job. If you're good at interviewing, each time you move, you should get a pay boost. This is because the market rate is usually higher than what your boss is paying you with your current work experience.

A house is a house 6 months later. In 6 months, a person can learn a lot. I learned most of my job within 6-7 months out of grad school.

If you want to act like a red pill alpha guy at work, you will need to own the company. Then you can fuck with your employees by leaving Lunchables in the fridge and wait for them to eat it.

Companies won't hire you if they see you quit jobs every 6 months. It costs companies money to hire and train people. We are talking permanent employees not contractors.

Ok, I can see where i was unclear with my point since I kind of rolled two semi-different statements together.

Yes, jumping jobs every 6 months is bad. But assuming you are not a dumbass, at any given time when you are working, you are probably worth more on the market since pay lags responsibilities. Also assuming you don't jump often enough to get a bad rep, you should get pay increases when you move. In fact, i built my companies HR pay model on a spreadsheet which stated they will offer 80% of the market rate to current employees when adjusting pay. Yet, they would pay 120% of market rate to hire someone.

Always be willing to walk but don't be so willing that they won't trust you. My bosses pick up on this vibe from me and they know not to screw me. At the same time, they can trust me knowing i will put my all into their projects.

Great point there, Moma. His boss probably had plans for that bread, and when he discovered it was no longer there for him to consume, anger instantly took over. We've all certainly been there before, right?

"Break room scavenger." That's awesome. I feel bad the guy didn't get a raise, but I think we all suspect that this isn't the first time he's eaten food that didn't belong to him. That kind of mindset just doesn't show up one day, I'm willing to bet he's been acting like this for quite awhile now. If not with food, then with something else. Still, his boss blew this out of proportion. His actions are certainly redeemable, however.

Thanks for the reality check boys.

BTW mech, would totally smash that lunchables package. Ham, cheese AND bread all in the same package?!. FUCK ME.

On Monday will bring in 3kg of nuts, 20kg of yoghurt AND 5 loaves of whole-meal organic grass fed BREAD. Definitely want to make sure it's paleo friendly.

"'you're not the same person we hired at the start'."

This is a giant red flag. I can't imagine saying that to an employee unless I was planning on firing him. If I were you I would be doing a SERIOUS re-evaluation of my attitude towards my co-workers. You've been getting lax on something; maybe you were nice to everybody when you started and as you got more comfortable you started taking a more teasing, joking attitude?

So maybe the food was a big deal. Maybe it wasn't. From your comments about being a "yes-man", calling your co-worker a "domineering, manipulative female who has the current boss by the balls", describing yourself as "obnoxious", I'm going to guess that you have a very abrasive attitude at work. It probably comes off as pretty funny to some of your co-workers, but I bet that at least one hates you with a passion, and has been telling everyone what a dick you are.

The thing you've gotta remember about working in an office is that the politics are like an iceberg. You see a tiny little piece of ice sticking out on top, and there's thirty times as much waiting below that you don't see. So for every comment made in a meeting like this, assume that there was an hour of discussion behind your back about how much of a dick you were. You don't know the details of it, but you know it's there.

My guess, based off the very limited information I see here, is that you'll be fired within the year if you don't change something. When it happens you'll be told something like what Roosh said, that you're "not a team player." If you don't want to work there anymore, and you'd rather strike it out on your own, that's fine, but if you want to keep working there ease up on the cocky-funny bull alpha act a bit. You don't have to be a suck-up, in fact I wouldn't recommend it, but make absolutely sure you're not saying anything about your co-workers that could be taken as an insult, or as suggesting that you think you're better than them.

One thing I learned from being unemployed a while back. It doesnt matter if your very good at your position. It does matter you get along with everyone. As long as everyone likes you and you dont burn any bridges you can get help from others when shit hits the fan.
