I'm actually pipelining someone in BH, so this is very helpful. At first I was reluctant because it isn't a beach city, but at the same time, I want to get a feel for how people in the interior of the country live their lives.

Talking of tiers what tier is Fortaleza?
It's the 5th biggest ?
I ask because although apparently it has 2 million people it seemed dead during the daytime in the week..maybe cause I didn't explore the interior areas, only around the Beira Mar.
Recife on the other hand seemed much busier with insane traffic at rush hour.
As a Brazilian from Sampa or Rio would you get bored and stir crazy if you had to live there for long ?

Why don't you try asking this on a Fortaleza thread?

bface,
how's your portuguese?
on 2k reais/month, you'd have to live as a local and in a place like BH, at least half of that would go towards your rent, leaving you with 1k reais/month. While doable, it wouldn't be fun IMO. Brazil ain't the cheap paradise it used to be be in the early to mid 2000's....From my multiple trips to Brasil, a minimum budget to have a good time would be at least 4k$/month and that would be as a minimum.

In the NorthEast I had a good time on a $3000 dollars per month budget. But in major cities like Sao Paulo, Rio, BH ...$3500 to $4000 sounds about right assuming you want to have fun.

Just started learning, I thought I will try to do a few trips there over the next few years to get fluent.
Is there a middle ground? I don't need much, just a bed and internet access to work.
What are you spending 4k on? Hotel? Partying?
Well, sounds like a good reason to go back to work!
