The top "trending" article at the Washington Post's Web site today (Sunday, Feb. 17) is an opinion piece headlined "I doubted Jussie Smollett. It breaks my heart that I might be right."

So, after almost a full month, the mainstream media is finally acknowledging this crime is almost certainly fake -- and now they're saying they originally had "doubts," even though didn't go public with those doubts in print.

The writer, Nana Efua Mumford, says today what we were saying here weeks ago (but in a less cynical way):

"And yet I struggled with Smollett’s story.

I tried telling myself that it is possible that two assailants were walking around downtown Chicago at 2 a.m. in January in 10-degree weather, waiting for a black victim. In addition to that, they were stalking around with a bottle of bleach and a rope. And ultimately, the prey they selected was an actor on a show that they must’ve been somewhat familiar with, because they were able to not only name the show but also know that he played a gay character. Never mind the fact that he was likely bundled up because again: Chicago, January, 10 degrees. Also, after he fought to get away, he left the rope around his neck until he got to the hospital."

Newspapers used to be on the cutting-edge of thought and call "bullshit" on people before the public. Now it's the opposite. They follow public opinion -- and grudgingly at that. They want THEIR truth, not the actual truth.

It's nice that someone in the mainstream media at least admitted as much. The problem is that next time we'll see the same thing happen all over again: A hate hoax, media hype, a groundswell of public doubt, and then the media saying "Oops! We goofed!" when it's too late.
