iBooks Author released

iBooks Author (a Mac only app) was released giving writers tools to self publish then sell their books through iBooks like musicians releasing their music through iTunes.

It has it's limitations such as the app and the means to release it being exclusive to Apple and your books can only be read on the iPad, but as a budding writer I see many potentials with this for writers as well as book lovers. Not only with making money but also another way of spreading knowledge for $$ (or free?).

No PC version of iBooks author?

A closed format that only works on iPads does not make sense.

Apple are being very smart, this is what Amazon should have done when (ideally before) they launched the Fire. Signing up textbook companies is brilliant, they are one of the most visual books that adults pick up.

This should light a fire under business and self help books. Video clips summarising each chapter, no more boring diagrams and charts. Coffee table books will be re-born, magazines will get a new lease on life (why just read a celeb interview when you can see it). The comic book industry should jump the hell on board. Perhaps one of the biggest area however will be childrens books.

Amazon needs to hit back fast, they have all these magazines and newspapers signed up on kindle but there is hardlly any images included. I subscribe to Time and Atlantic on my kindle and it really sucks. They also have the vast majority of self pub authors on there side and they need to step-up and make it easy for those authors to embrace this new mixed-media collision with traditional books.

Sure traditional authors may not want to add images or video to there novel, but perhaps a soundtrack? Imagine reading a thriller with an accompanying score?

The sky is the limit.
