I've enlisted in the Marine Corps. I ship to Boot in 2 months and I'm going Recon. I'll be done with undergrad with a double major from a good school by then. Not to sound like a massive douche, but I'm already a natural alpha. I can't wait for the man that the Marine Corps will make me on top of my natural self.

I live in Chicago and I've stopped telling girls that I've enlisted. The consensus is, "Why the fuck are you doing this with a 3.9 GPA and two marketable majors?" And I go from intriguing dude to dumbass most times. Whatever though. It's something that I want to do. I have plenty of life ahead of me to put those degrees to use.

I just, admittedly very selfishly, wish Recon had anywhere near the name recognition as other units under SOCOM.

You should not have enlisted in the Marine Corps with a bachelors degree. Either back out of your contract (once you get to boot camp it's much more difficult to do this) and pursue the officer route. Or don't enlist altogether.

FWIW, I enlisted in the Army with a bachelors degree and have served a little over 4 years.

"The metrics," ha. You may be. But it appears that SOF is dangled to a lot more potential recruits than there are billets in SOF. Hence the Navy's "SEAL challenge" option, etc. If you don't look good or they just don't need you at the time, you end up in line units.

The mission of Marine Recon battalions is not that much different than Army cavalry units. Just add water and subtract armor. So there are plenty of Recon Marines, you'll probably end up in a Recon battalion.

Agree somewhat, but this is mostly narrow minded. While there are poor people, slackers and the rest, you can't attribute that entirely to the reason why "chicks stopped digging soldiers." There are only a few ways someone can become an officer. One of those is ROTC in college. Many in my class were engineering majors who came from good families. I could have afforded college, but like most, by accumulating loan debt in the process. When I graduated, I had 8K in debt which is nothing as most know. As for Enlisted people, while some are the way you describe, many are smart and simply choose to hold off on college, do their 4 years, get out and use their GI bill for school. I've worked with many enlisted who went on to become doctors, engineers and other things. Regarding "volunteer (more or less)." For the record, it's all volunteer.

I think what others have posted is more accurate. Frame. Area you're in. Stigma.

Personally I think stigma has a lot to do with it. I think people are tired of the current wars, and path to endless wars our government is seemingly taking us down. But that's a different subject.

Something that hasn't been mentioned is the stigma of high divorce rates, mental illness, suicides, long deployments and constantly moving around. These things that have been on the rise over the years. A lot of women know about these, and just the thought of instability for some women is too much.

While a number of guys I know find women that are cool with the lifestyle, I will say (at least looking at the Marines and Navy) that many guys end up going for some bottom-of-the-barrel-fat-as-fuck girls with mental problems. I seriously don't know where they find these women, but bless those poor souls for taking these potential cockblockers off the streets. I just wish I didn't have to deal with them in my emergency room.

Top recipients of money contributions from the military were Barack Obama and Ron Paul. Obama got almost twice as much as Romney from military people.

I know a colonel who maxed out for Obama in 2008 - not black, he just served in Iraq and was sick of the GOP's warmongering. One thing military people don't like and that's chickenhawkery.

FWIW, I enlisted in the Army with a bachelors degree and have served a little over 4 years.

I have a lengthy arrest record. Nobody's making me an officer without prior service. I had to jump through hoops just to get the waivers to go enlisted.

He showed me the spots on his screen, but alright. He had no incentive to lie. I had already taken the ASVAB and been a few weeks into the process. I'm fine with whatever though. I'm sure I'll be fine.

Did you serve in either units I was in Cav myself, talked to a few Recon men during training... the training and mission of a 19D is totally different from a 0321. Army Cav are mechanized or motorized troops of average quality, short MOS training... your average 18 year old whole played HS football and Call of Duty will be able to become a Cav Scout since their method of recon is from the inside of a Bradley, Stryker or HMMWV. Recon Marines have a difficult selection process similar to SOCOM units, long training pipeline involving amphibious and underwater operations, parachuting, advanced schools, small largely foot mobile teams.

9 wks Basic
7 wks Scout school

Floss go to socnet to confirm your contract and find out (search before posting) what you need to be prepared. I hope you have had a lot of practice swimming and ruck marching, don't depend on boot camp or 'pre-indoc' to get you in shape and prepare your body, unless you are one of the genetically gifted.

I would chalk that up to over saturation. In Norfolk, VA scooping up a chick because your in the Military simply wont happen but I think that you'll find that in proximal locations it my give you a bump. I scooped up a chick in a bar simply for being active duty it seemed in Mobile, AL. Raleigh is a tight city to visit to meet college girls that have very little acces to military personel and I've had a bit of success there as well. Curently I'm in Rota, SP. 85% of the base live in the town of Rota where evey one knows every body and the town is basicly there to accomidate to sailors and Air Force personel. The remailing personel a spread through out the surrounding areas and I tell you I am an alien in the city of Puerto De Sta Maria. Got a place kinda close to the action so that logistics are good and now I'm just meeting prople and trying to pick up a little launguage.
