YMG's thread on Jason Fried reminded me of Ruby and I was wondering if anyone else here is a programmer?

If so, which languages/frameworks do you guys typically use? I really want to switch over to Ruby, but I hate the syntax (among other things). It reminds me of VisualBasic, which I despise.

I primarily use PHP in combination with JavaScript for UI stuff. My preference for PHP/MySQL is mostly just out of habit and I'm very open to switching.

I think commonjs, NodeJS and nosql systems like redis are going to make for some very powerful technology stacks in the future, but there's such little documentation/servers for them at the moment that I'm wary about making a full switch.

What do you guys typically use for large scale projects and why?

I started my programming life as a Java guy, and then my career shifted to database development. Now I am primarily a PHP/MySQL coder. I haven't been using any of the existing PHP frameworks (although I would like to spend some time with CakePHP), primarily because most of my work has been with augmenting/enhancing existing open source applications/platforms.

A lot of my recent efforts has been spent with Wordpress. As a side note, if anyone thinks that wordpress is just good for blogging, they need to drop that idea. None of the Wordpress projects that I have worked on, and am working on now, involve blogs. Folks are using Wordpress for e-commerce stores, online collaboration, content rich paysites, etc.

There isn't one. It is just a matter of picking a language that best meets your needs, based on your existing skills, and the resources you have available.

Security issues tend to be more about the programmer than the language. As far as platform independence is concerned, it would be easier to tell you which language IS NOT platform independent. In that case, the answer is the Microsoft suite of languages (ASP, ASP.NET, C#, Visual Basic.NET). All of these require a windows server. The other popular languages (PHP, Python, Java, Ruby, etc) can run on just about any server.

In terms of most available, I would have to say that PHP wins in that category. I have not seen a Linux/Unix based web hosting service (which makes ups 95%+ of all of the web hosting services) that does not have PHP available in the past 3-5 years. Perl is probably almost as popular, simply because of legacy issues and the fact that virtually EVERY unix variant has Perl on it. Python would be next, followed by Ruby.

If you are administering your own server, you can install any of these languages on it, though.

My suggestion would be to start at the begining. Learn HTML/CSS, then transition to PHP. w3schools.com seems to be popular among newbies. I learned to code in school, work and from books so I have never really used that site, though.

I just got into Ruby a few days ago and I love it.
Ruby does not look like VB at all? ...

Every time I go back to my php projects it's painful to code... Ruby is awesome.
Can't go wrong with either Ruby or Python.

@joehoya: Try CodeIgniter, it's really easy to pick up. Wordpress is a horrible ressource hog. I know some shared hosts are starting to disallow Wordpress because it is bad for the server performance. I would not recommend using it for anything other than a simple blog for that reason.

Looks like cPanel is working hard to implement Ruby on Rails. This will make the hosting situation much better (has been a problem in the past for RoR).

That is true about Wordpress. I don't suggest it as a first choice for non-blog applications. However, a lot of people are already familiar with it, and ask me to develop plugins to extend its existing capability to what they desire.

bface: I know, Ruby isn't like VB, lol. What I meant was that it uses indenting instead of brackets. It was a stupid comparison.

I did a bit more research and found that hosting for node.js and server side JavaScript actually isn't that uncommon anymore. I would definitely suggest you guys look into it. Also, check out express. It's a web framework with a similar structure to Rails, but based on node.js.

And, yeah, WordPress is extremely versatile. I've been using it for years to build all kinds of websites for clients. Shame it's so resource heavy.
