Gangster movies are the shit.

I just watched Once upon a time in America... Such a beautiful movie. I'd love to live in those times in New York.

I also love Scarface and the second Godfather.

You can learn a lot from gangster movies.

I wish I had watched gangster movies when I was young instead of popcorn American movies.

Assuming you're looking for recommendations. Here are some good ones:

Il Cammorrista - starring Ben Gazzarra, shows the rise of a Neapolitan godfather - based on the life of Raffaele Cutolo.

Romanzo Criminale - great film based on the story of the Magliana gang who briefly dominated Rome's underworld.

Gomorra - gritty film, shows a more modern, less glamourous version of the Naples underworld.

Shanghai Triad - about the Triads in the 1920s.

Anyone else have other obscure recommendations? Especially curious about films from the Balkans and Russia.

The Killing of a Chinese Bookie

Directed by John Cassavetes, so real off the wall, low budget affair, and maybe some improvised ,I liked the feel of it though.

Here's the trailer

If u like gangster movies and the stories of gangsters, go to YouTube and watch all of the biographies of some of the most infamous gangsters of all times: Carlo gambino, frank nitty, Paul castellano, myer lansky etc.

That's actually one of my favorite past times.

Urban gangster films are cool too tho: Belly, Menace to Society, Boyz in the Hood, Paid in Full, Shottas, New Jack City, I'm Bout it, Sugar Hill etc

I love gangster movies too

Mesrine: Killer Instinct (Part 1)
Mesrine: Public Enemy #1 (Part II)

Accurate depiction of the life of Jacques Mesrine - French gangster. If you've never heard of him, do yourself a favor and watch these movies. Vincent Cassel does a superb job playing Mesrine. The movie is in French so you have to use the subtitles, but well worth the effort.

Things to Do in Denver When You're Dead.

There's a HUGE lesson to learn about gaming women in that movie. Saw it when I was 18 and it helped forge my skill as a player. It's probably the most important single event that changed the way I interact with the opposite sex.

There are so many, and it is key to watch these growing up as a youth.

These days, they don't make too many good ones.

In fact, I just wrote up a post about how there are no good G's in movies these days.

Especially in American cinema.

Here is a little write up on The Buisness (a must watch):

Finally a G (International Playboy) in a Modern Movie

http://www.thegmanifesto.com/2011/10/fin...movie.html

Curiously enough, the main G looks a lot like me.

Layer Cake is also a modern classic.

And this:

Dope Movie: Rise of the Footsoldier

http://www.thegmanifesto.com/2009/01/dop...ldier.html

Was easily the best movie of the last 10 years.

I like movies that deal with the E-tab trade, because, well, I like watching movies about my era when I was a young pup on the come up.

Update:

Not a "Gangster Movie" per se (and I don't mean Thomas Keller's restaurant in NYC Per Se either) but a gang movie.

The Warriors.

Best close quarters fight scene ever (mad movies bite parts of this scene):

And who can forget the classic, The Warriors VS The Baseball Furies:

The Warriors. Thats a good fucking movie. There's an older movie about gangs in NYC that has a huge brawl at the end on a football field (i think). It's been years since i've seen it. It was pretty good from what I remember. These are some off top.

this one was stupid but snoop dogg had me crackin up

Shottas (2002) - great Jamaican film about the rise of two kids to become top gangsters in Kingston and Miami. Watch it with subtitles if your patois isn't good. One of the best soundtracks of any gangster film. There's a sequel partially set in LA but it's not nearly as good as the original. The whole film seems to be on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ropjIBZ5uZg

Some more good British ones:

Cass (2008) - about a young Jamaican kid who is adopted by an elderly white couple in East London and rises to become one of the top gangsters in London. Based on a true story, the real Cass even makes a couple of cameo appearances.

Essex Boys (2000) - about the E trade, set in Essex. Low key with very interesting characters. Also based on a true story.

Great call Pilgrim.

That is one of my all time favorite movies.

70's Jamaican Gangster flick.

And yes. An incredible soundtrack.

These two low-pro tracks on the soundtrack are so Gangster, that just by listening to the your Game jumps up a level:

It's no coincidence that all of these pretty much include Robert de Niro - such is his quality in the role.

I just came across this thread searching for movie recommendations.

I did not see Infernal Affairs on here so I had to add it.

Easily up there with the Godfather trilogy. Watch all three Infernal Affairs to really get deep into the characters.

The Departed is probably the best movie of all time. Badass, cool, funny as fuck, violent, and one of the best cast of characters/actors ever assembled. If this movie isn't in your top 5, then it means you've probably sucked a fair number of large black dicks.

I LOVE this film...to this day, I watch it every time I see it running on cable.
