There was this time when I went to Kuala Lumpur. It took a lot of time to find a residence where I could stay for a month that was not too touristy. I didn't want to stay in Bukit Bintang with the nasty malays and their stench. In the end I found a great condo and I paid the guy 1 month with a great discount on airbnb. But I quickly noticed that the walls were made of cardboard (even though it was a premium residence with gym and luxury swimming pool). And the malay scrotes love to play motorbike at night on the weekend and make as much noise as possible. So even with earplugs it was fucking impossible to sleep. My apartment wasn't even facing the noisy street in question, but it had a small angle of this street that was facing it. So at least I've learned a lesson : even if a small angle of a noisy street faces your apartment, it WILL be noisy. You have to make your geometric calculations on google maps to make sure it won't happen.

Then there was this time in Thailand where I paid upfront a condo for 3 months. I quickly realized that the main 2 thai people who were in charge of the management of the building hated my guts. There was this fat thai lady at the reception, and a low chubby gardener who was always death staring me. Well, at least my apartment was quiet. I've rarely had noise issues in thailand, but in Kuala Lumpur all the apartments / hotels I've been to were made of cardboard. So one day my motorbike suddenly wouldn't start. I noticed the gardener seemed satisfied. I calmly called the motorbike agency that was renting it to me and they came over in 10 minutes with a new motorbike to replace it. The gardener didn't seem so happy anymore. If it was him who sabotaged my bike, well his misdeeds had effect on his brave fellow thai mechanics man.

I'm not happy with airbnb (what else is there?) in Latam, including Mexico. Double prices from what they should be, wide angle lenses to virtually double the size of rooms on ads, range from clean to moldy, security can be a hassle (have to pre-approve guests anyone??) The biggest point of contestation is, the bed--not exactly a petty thing for us. Some are just two pieces shoved together, which falls apart during sex, others are prison piss mattresses. Try to ask any technical question, like the recoil rating of the matterss, and instead of honest stares, you get a con job answer.
Any idea on how to get around this?

Airbnb prices are not what they used to be, because it has become a real business for many getting loans to buy property and then put them on Airbnb and asking high prices. You must be patient when looking, some good deals sometimes, but very very rare.
It's becoming increasingly harder for solo players to afford expensive apartments in the center of cities.
The good thing is that there will be less competion, as most Casanovas won't be able to adapt to the new reality of Airbnb / Booking.com
The only solution is to increase your budget and adapt if you live the playboy lifestyle. Other solution to pipeline hard, avoid weekdays if possible, they seem to be completely dead for most places, get an Airbnb for Friday -Sunday, then stay somewhere more budget friendly on weekdays.
