His solution, rent control. Basically severely regulate rent prices. He gives an example of a rent controlled house where the prices have not gone up since the 70s. Never mind the fact this will severely hurt landlords because inflation, demand, and upkeep (because services will increase with inflation). He then states:

"but naturally anything that helps out actual people and takes money out of some rich assholes pockets is going to face a lot of opposition. Critics of URC have said policies like these will disincentive landlords from or staying on top of building upkeep. They've also said it disincentives further real estate development which to me people not wanting to gentrify your neighborhood"

When he was met with valid arguments against UCR his retort was that those are invalid since they would be promoting "gentrification".

Rent is high because of supply and demand. On the supply side we have too many stupid regulation preventing development. Even when they are met if development hurts someones feelings then it can still get shut down (here is a video showing how development gets stopped in San Francisco because of gentrification

On the demand side, stupid progressive polices like mass immigration has brought in thousands of people who are now competing for these housing units. Yet the millennial blames the economics and not his own stupid progressive ways.

Rent control is a great idea that always backfires. I don't have any better solution, but I know that like all leftist solutions,, rent control always makes things worse. No, I have no proof...chalk this up as an unsupported opinion.

Yes, rent control leads to ghettos and rich kids magically getting lucky.

The most important driver of rent inflation is immigration and foreign ownership. It's a complete betrayal to let the chinese buy property with ill gotten corrupt gains from back home. It's government approved money laundering. The same goes for hedge funds buying property.

There needs to be limits to how many investment properties you're allowed to own and there needs to be laws against empty building. Lastly, it should NEVER be possible for foreigners to buy real estate. Rent only.

It's really more of a tragedy of the commons problem. Politicians pander to the largest voting bloc by protecting the entitlement programs that benefit them.

The obnoxious aspect of the boomers isn't really anything they individually did, it's more their tendency to take credit for the cushy time and place they were born into and then carp about younger generations being no good. Like with education: every time I've heard about a boomer's college experience it involved plenty of partying or dithering around, yet they ended up doing fine even with a froofy humanities degree. But this day in age when a Millennial does the same thing and gets a silly degree he'll be fucked up the ass and suddenly it's bad character and all his fault for poor decision-making.

Every couple of months I see the whole "Boomer suck" discussion popping up. If there is one thread that I picked up for all those discussion is the fact that Boomers as whole generation have failed to acknowledge the world is a screwed up place, partial, do to their choices. A generation of Dr. Pangloss from Candide, boasting that we live in the best of all possible world, as their children and grandchildren are subjected to the bad outcomes of their poorly thought out decisions.

Its the dishonest that they can not understand that they fucked up and should make amends for their actions. They can only see and feel for the short term actions and consequences of their current existence, while many of us in those pockets of sanity in this clown world are seeing the long term consequence of unaddressed issues. The only we can do now is find the lost fragments of Western World that the Boomer have destroy and mend into a better future, instead of complaining of avocado toast.

Boomers are 180 degrees opposite of the World War 2 generation. The WW2 people would do what it took, sacrifice their lives as needed, to give their children a better life.

Boomers would sacrifice their children's future to indulge themselves, then make up some BS reasons why it's the right thing. They are the most narcissistic group of humans ever to have lived. Ever.

Don't tell me: "oh, they're misunderstood". That's bullshit. They are easy to understand. They are selfish narcissistic assholes. Sure, brilliant and successful in their prime, and created a lot of amazing things, but now that they're getting old, their veneer of success is wearing down and all we see are selfish old fucks grinding their children and grandchildren into dirt poverty to feed their massive egos.

Of course they will win. Their kids don't have the numbers or the balls to resist them. After the last of the boomers die, the kids will be standing in a wasteland, looking at burned-out factories and ghettos, gated communities where the billionaire's have separated from the commoners. The middle class gone. Police and government owned by the rich and the corporations. The dreams of a healthy futuristic middle-class society, the dreams of the post-WW2 generation, destroyed - not - by any external foe, but by the greed and degradation of the boomers.

The problem with your thinking (and the main reason why we've clashed on this forum) is that you believe that this state of things is purely spontaneous: boomers are just selfish, narcissistic people, women are just plain evil etc.

How is looking after your own self-interest better than virtue signalling?

I'd argue that it's equally bad. Unless by "self" you mean community, but boomers don't care about community or the welfare of the next generation. If they did, then they wouldn't have shipped off all the jobs to China. Nor would they hire illegals from the Home Depot parking lot to build their deck.
